Allentown officer charged with DUI in Carbon crash

An Allentown police officer has been charged with DUI after a crash in Carbon County.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer James Danner of the Mahoning Township Police Department in the case against Joseph Krebs:

At 6:53 p.m. Feb. 26, a crash was reported at 108 Packerton Dam Drive, with a black Ford F150 on its driver’s side facing toward Route 209 in the yard of a residence.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Krebs, 33, of Jim Thorpe, was inside the ambulance when police arrived. He said a deer ran out in front of him.

As he began to explain what happened, Danner detected alcohol on Krebs’ breath and his speech was slurred.

Danner examined the crash scene and found that the vehicle was going eastbound when it went across the double yellow line, and continued off the left side of the roadway, where it struck shrubbery and a utility pole head on.

The utility wires connected to 108 Packerton Dam Drive were pulled away from the residence. After impact, the vehicle went over a slight embankment where it came to rest on its driver’s side.

After Krebs was evaluated by EMS, Danner asked him how much he had to drink, and he replied three beers.

Krebs was then asked to perform four field sobriety tests, and he responded and he used expletives to challenge Danner.

Krebs also asked Danner to make it look good by cuffing him up and driving him away from the scene.

Krebs failed the field sobriety test and refused the breath test.

Danner concluded Krebs was incapable of safe driving, and placed him under arrest.

Krebs was then asked to submit to a blood test, and he refused, declining to sign the form.

Krebs faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and careless driving.

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing May 25 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
