Local Roundup: Results from May 9

Panther Valley clinched the Schuylkill League Division 3 baseball title with a victory over Minersville on Monday.

In other action, Marian head coach Tony Radocha reached a milestone win total.

Northwestern posted wins in three sports (baseball, softball, boys lacrosse), while Pleasant Valley won both its contests on the diamond.

BASEBALL

Minersville-Panther Valley

A dominating effort on the mound by Brad Hood lifted Panther Valley to a 6-1 Schuylkill League victory over Minersville and the Division 3 championship.

Hood went the distance, allowing just three hits and an unearned run. He walked one and struck out nine.

After the Miners tallied in the top of the first, PV’s offense scored three times in the bottom half to take a lead it would not relinquish.

Hayden Goida collected three hits and knocked in a pair of runs, while Stephen Hood finished with two hits, two runs and three RBIs.

The Panthers also received two hits from both Chase Weaver and Cody Orsulak.

PV, which won its fifth straight game, improved to 14-4 overall and 9-3 in the league.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

A three-run first inning propelled Marian to a 5-2 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

The win, the Colts’ fourth in a row and the sixth in their last seven games, was the 100th in the career of head coach Tony Radocha.

Chase Petrilyak delivered a run-scoring triple in the first and eventually scored on an error. Later in the inning, Lachlan Segedy came through with an RBI double.

Petrilyak finished with two hits, the other a double, and two runs, while Brian Hinkle added three hits and a run. Segedy and Andrew Baran both ended with a pair of hits.

Winning pitcher Jake Bobish allowed one run and struck out four in four innings of work. Hinkle tossed the final three frames for the save.

Marian improved to 12-6 overall, and 7-5 in the league. The Bears dropped to 6-11, and 2-10.

Northern Lehigh-Palmerton

A strong pitching performance by Connor Beahm allowed Palmerton to gain a 7-1 Colonial League victory over rival Northern Lehigh.

Beahm tossed six innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out 12. He also helped his own cause at the plate, finishing with two hits and two RBIs.

The Blue Bombers, who opened the scoring with a three-run second inning, also received a pair of doubles and RBIs from Cole Serfass. Daniel Lucykanish chipped in with two hits, an RBI and two runs, while Trey Sterling scored a pair of runs.

Josh Kistler had a double for the Bulldogs.

Palmerton ended the regular season with a 13-7 overall record, and a league mark of 11-7. Nolehi is now 1-18, and 1-16.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Ben Boyer had four hits and knocked in six runs to lead Northwestern to an 18-3 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Northwestern also received a big day at the plate from Justin Augustus, who had three hits, scored four times and knocked in a run. Dylan Witkowski added a hit, and also scored three times and had three RBIs.

Zachory Russo chipped in with a hit and two runs for the Tigers, who won their eighth game in a row and finished regular season play at 13-7 overall, and 12-5 in the league.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Tamaqua ended an eight-game losing streak by using an eight-run inning to defeat Pottsville, 9-3, in Schuylkill League play.

The Blue Raiders trailed 3-1 entering the home sixth, but an RBI single by Cian McLaughlin and a bases-loaded walk to Tommy Case tied the game. An error allows the go-ahead runs to score, while Wyatt Steigerwalt delivered an RBI single and Mason Ligenza hit a sacrifice fly.

Mason Moyer gained the win, allowing two earned runs in six innings. Moyer walked two and struck out nine.

Luke Kane had three hits, scored a run and knocked in one for Tamaqua (2-13; 2-9). Ligenza finished with a pair of hits and two runs, with Steigerwalt adding two hits. Lucas Kamant also contributed a hit, a run and two RBIs.

For the Tide (7-9; 4-7), Tanner Conrad had three hits.

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pleasant Valley closed its regular season with an 8-3 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain East.

Jack Smale had two hits, scored twice and knocked in three for the Bears, who grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Ryan Kymer added two hits and two RBIs, while Dom Payan collected a pair of hits and crossed home twice. PV, now 14-6, also received two hits and a run from Nate Loch.

Winning pitcher Nate Mostosky tossed three hitless and scoreless innings, striking out four.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain received a strong pitching outing from Dylan Sattazhan to register a key 4-1 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

The Olympians were looking to tie the Eagles for the wild card spot in Division 1, but couldn’t solve the arm of Sattazhan, who allowed just one hit and one run while striking out nine.

Thorpe’s Drew Wimmer had a hit and an RBI, while Jack Edwards accounted for his team’s other hit. James Lordi suffered the loss, but struck out 10.

Blue Mountain is now 11-6 overall, and 8-3 in the league. The Olympians dropped to 8-9, and 6-5.

Lehighton-North Schuylkill

Lehighton outhit North Schuylkill, but the Spartans came away with a 9-3 Schuylkill League victory.

The Indians finished with 10 hits, four of them by Brady O’Donnell, but couldn’t pick up the win as North Schuylkill scored four times in the first and never trailed.

Jake Hall paced the Spartans (8-8; 7-5) with two hits and three RBIs.

Lehighton (7-11; 2-9) also received a pair of hits from Talan Sensinger. Aiden Rarick chipped in with a hit, a run and an RBI. Michael Yeakel also contributed a hit and an RBI.

Shenandoah Valley jumped out to a big lead and ended a three-game losing streak by downing Weatherly, 14-2, in Schuylkill League action.

The Devils (12-6; 8-4) scored six times in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Joseph Vevasis. Vevasis ended the contest with a pair of hits and four RBIs.

Wyatt Higgins had a hit, a run and an RBI for the Wreckers (1-15; 0-11). Dylan Buck had the other hit for Weatherly.

Marian-Mahanoy Area

Locked in a 1-1 tie with Mahanoy Area, Marian exploded for six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to register a 13-2 Schuylkill League victory over Mahanoy Area.

The win was the Fillies’ seventh in a row, and lifted their record to 14-4 overall, and 9-3 in the league.

Winning pitcher Morgan Kelly had two hits - a double and a triple -and scored a pair of runs. Julia Meiss added two hits, one a double, and knocked in two runs.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Brynn Balliet and Peyton Neumoyer combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as Northwestern blanked Catasauqua 4-0 in Colonial League action.

Balliet tossed the first two innings, allowing no hits and a walk while striking out three. Neumoyer relieved in the third and pitched the final five frames, giving up the only hit and striking out five.

Isabelle Akelaitis collected two hits, one a double, two RBIs and a run for the Tigers, who improved to 14-3 overall, and 13-2 in the league. Marissa Christman also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Morgan Farthing and Olivia Stofflet both added two hits, with Farthing also scoring a run.

The Roughies fell to 4-11 overall, and 3-11 in the CL.

Pleasant Valley-PM West

Brianca Pridham and Jovie Valenzeula both knocked in three runs to lead Pleasant Valley to a 14-7 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pocono Mountain West.

Emilee Roberti also blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Bears, who improved to 10-9.

Lydia Borger, Kailynn Getz and Hailey Korck all had a pair of hits for PV.

Pottsville-Tamaqua

Visiting Pottsville snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the seventh inning to gain a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Raiders’ only run came on a solo homer off the bat of Leah Crowley, while Gabby Robb and Riley MacMillan also had hits. Bryn Clifford pitched well in defeat, giving up just six hits while fanning 11.

Pottsville improved to 10-8 overall and 7-6 in the league, while Tamaqua now stands at 7-11 and 6-7.

Lehighton-North Schuylkill

Maliyah Alexander pitched a two-hit shutout to lead North Schuylkill to a 15-0 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

The win kept the Spartans tied for first in Division 1 with Blue Mountain. Both teams are 11-2 in the league.

Alexander gave up two walks and four strikeouts in the four-inning contest. The only hits she allowed came off the bats of Amy Dwojewski and Eryn Mertz.

The Spartans are now 13-3 overall. The Indians dropped to 6-12, and 3-9 in the league.

Jim Thorpe-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain’s Olivia Labe pitched a perfect game to lead the Eagles to a 13-0 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Labe allowed no hits or walks and struck out six to help her team stay tied atop the Division 1 standings with an 11-2 record.

Lindsay Gibson had three hits and scored three runs for the winners, now 17-2 overall.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 4-14 overall, and 1-12 in the league.

Minersville-Panther Valley

Minersville scored multiple runs in every inning to cruise to a 19-1 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

For PV, Mikayla Yuricheck accounted for her team’s only run with a solo homer, while Liz Rex, Lucy Greco and Myla Krapf all added singles.

Minersville is now 8-10 overall, and 7-5 in the league, while the Panthers fell to 3-15 and 1-10.

Weatherly’s Madyson vonFrisch registered her 300th-career strikeout, but Shenandoah Valley pulled out a 4-3 Schuylkill League victory. vonFrisch fanned 14 and walked just one in the contest.

The Wreckers (5-10; 2-9) received two doubles from vonFrisch. Raynessa Diaz added two hits, one a double., while Kelly Michaels scored twice.

Shenandoah improved to 8-8 overall, and 7-5 in the league.

BOYS LACROSSE

Saucon Valley-Northwestern

Austin Sosnovik had five goals and added an assist to help lead Northwestern to a 14-3 victory over Saucon Valley.

Andrew Collins finished with five assists for the Tigers, who improved to 11-7, while Cade Christopher contributed a goal and four assists.

Drew Sabo added three goals and a helper, with Blaine Snyder also recording three goals.

The winners also received a goal from both Taylor Wikert and Stone Sosnovik.

Colin Zavacky led the Panthers (4-12) with two goals.
