Lehighton residents voice concerns

The condition of a major roadway, along with salaries for a new borough manager and police chief are on the minds of Lehighton residents.

John Kreitz, a former borough councilman, asked borough council last week about the condition of Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard.

Kreitz noted that it had been agreed to spend $125,000 for repairs.

Council President Grant Hunsicker said the borough has a grant for $200,000.

Kreitz then asked about fixing potholes and cracks on that particular highway.

“We can’t allow our infrastructure to fall apart,” Kreitz said.

Councilwoman Lisa Perry said things are tight in the borough, much like they are for everyone.

Kreitz remarked that the borough can’t take care of its infrastructure, but it can afford to hire a borough manager.

Scott Rehrig, also a former borough councilman, asked council where it’s going to get the extra money to pay for a new borough manager and new chief of police.

Rehrig also asked “why are the roads in such a deplorable condition?

Perry responded to Rehrig’s question about funding for the borough manager/chief of police positions by stating that in order for the borough to get qualified people, they have to pay them more.

It was noted that the money is not budgeted, which prompted Rehrig to ask “where’s the money coming from if you don’t have it budgeted?

Perry again addressed Rehrig’s uneasiness with the situation.

“It’s coming from somewhere,” Perry said. “Some projects just won’t be completed.”
