Fire destroys Franklin Twp. home

A home was decimated by a swift-moving fire late Friday night in Franklin Township. Township fire Chief Lynn Diehl said firefighters were dispatched at 8:37 p.m. to the home at 445 Main Road.

Diehl said that upon arrival, the home was fully involved.

“It was a single home way back off the road. We had trouble accessing it, trouble getting big trucks back there,” Diehl said. “We laid hoses down an access road and fought it that way.”

Diehl said no one was at home at the time of the incident, and added there were no injuries.

He said the fire was under control by 1:20 a.m. Saturday, and that they were back a couple of times for hot spots.

Diehl said the cause has not officially been determined, but added a fire marshal was called in and was at the scene on Saturday.

“There was some time of explosion involved, whether it be gas or what not,” he said. “Doors and windows were blown out into the yard.”

As a result, Diehl said the home was a total loss.

He said also assisting at the scene were the Lehighton Fire Department, Bowmanstown Fire Department, Parryville Fire Department, Mahoning Valley Fire Department, and Towamensing Township Fire Department.

Diehl said there were no hydrants in the area, so the fire was totally fought with tankers.

“It went well Everybody worked OK together, no major problems,” he said. “Main Road’s a tight road, so it was difficult getting everything going and keeping it open, but we made it work.”
