Special birthday

Longtime home economics teacher Marian Mackes will be celebrating her 100 birthday on May 7.

Scam Jam held

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging has announced a free noncommercial event taking place Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., called Scam Jam, at Mount Pocono VFW Post 3448 in Coolbaugh Township.

Scam Jam is organized through the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities Investor Education and Consumer Outreach Office to discuss Scam Prevention Information.

This is a free, noncommercial event, but attendance is limited and registration is strongly recommended. RSVP to Scamjam or 1-800-PA-BANKS.

Loving the Land

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will begin a Bible study at 1 p.m. Thursdays, based on Loving the Land, led by Pastor John Harding.

Kozen retires

Bernie Kozen, executive director of the WEPOSC, is retired as of April 29. He requests that all inquiries to the West End Park and Open Space Commission should be directed to Chestnuthill Township at 570-992-7247.

The township will be the contact moving forward in the immediate future. His assistant, Kim, has decided to move on to other opportunities.

Senior lunches

The Chestnuthill Senior Center at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville and open Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., allows its participants to choose a hot lunch if so desired. Friday’s choice is stuffed shells, and next Wednesday’s is Asian chicken and broccoli.

Participants so choosing must call the center manager, Donna Riedel, at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

There is a request for a meal donation for each meal ordered.

Blood drive

The American Legion, Gilbert, is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

West End pantry

A distribution will be held at the West End Food Pantry in Kunkletown from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday.

Outreach auction

Effort UMC is holding its annual Mission Outreach Auction from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday. A viewing of the items is set for 5 to 6 p.m.

Dancing feet

The 2022 PVHS mini-thon is happening from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday.

Registration open

From Our Lady Queen of Peace Church comes word that registration is open for 2022-2023 for Sunday religious classes. The classes will begin at 9 a.m., or immediately following the 8 a.m. Mass, until 10:30 a.m.

Busy stitchers

The Quilt Made with Love group of the Western Pocono Women’s Club completed 32 lap quilts for the veterans and the Meals on Wheels clients.

Electronic recycling

Each year Eldred Township offers electronic recycling free to our residents. It begins on May 1 and continues until September of each year. Drop-offs are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Anyone needing a different time or day is asked to call the office to make arrangements.

If one arrives after 9 a.m. one is asked to sign-in in the main office before continuing to the back of the building to deposit equipment.

Garden open

The Garden of Giving, McMichaels, will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on May 7 and 14 to prepare for the planting of crops on May 21.

In addition to volunteers, including board members, the garden is seeking someone with skill as a beekeeper.

Bees are the hard workers of any garden and are necessary for pollination of the crops.

A side benefit will be delicious golden honey.

The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the ReMax building on Route 715 in Effort.

Sunday breakfast

Effort UMC is holding its next fellowship breakfast on Sunday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. which is Mother’s Day.

Bingo night

The Main Hall of American Legion Post 927, Gilbert, will be the place for bingo, open to the community, on Monday evening, beginning with card sales at 6:30 p.m. and games being called as of 7 p.m.

Meeting changed

The American Legion Riders monthly meeting is changed to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 15, at the American Legion Post 927, 646 Fairgrounds Road/Route 209, Gilbert, due to Mother’s Day on May 8.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, is hosting its next community supper from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Housewarming held

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God held a housewarming to help welcome Pastors Marcos and Yas as they begin helping serve this Brodheadsville church.

Effort Women

The next meeting of the Women’s Group of Effort will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, at Effort UMC church.

Hostesses are Alma Middleton and Lucy Boomer, with devotions to be provided by Alma Middleton. The program will be Women’s Resources.

A representative will talk about the group’s mission and also let attendees know how each one can help, by bringing items like diapers, or then donating socks, underwear, sanitary napkins, etc., later.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet Ministry will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Touch of Home

Operation: Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the American Legion Post 927 home in Gilbert.

Legion Auxiliary

The Legion Auxiliary, Unit 927, will meet 7 p.m. May 11 at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert. Guests are welcome.

Flea market

St. Peter’s UMC spring flea market will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 14, with a rain date of May 21.

The autumn flea market will be held Sept. 17.

Sunday breakfast

Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 839 of Sciota has posted its pancake breakfast schedule, which begins May 15. The breakfast features all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee for a set cost.

A giant striped tent will provide shade and ambience for breakfast diners as they are surrounded by private aircraft and spiffy British automobiles: The Keystone British Car Club will display their prized vehicles.

Additionally, the pilots of EAA 839 will offer free Young Eagle flights to young people ages 7-17. Parental release forms are required.

The pancake breakfast will be served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the hangar, 222 Hickory Lane, Saylorsburg.

Directions are: turn off Route 209 at Miller’s Flower Shop by Kate.

Aging Advisory

Monroe County Area Agency on Aging’s Advisory Council is seeking members. Its functions include assisting to develop ideas and solutions to the challenges being faced by older adults in the community and sharing said information with the Area Agency on Aging.

Soup sale set

Three kinds of soup are being offered by Effort UMC for its next soup sale: shrimp, roasted corn chowder and old-fashioned ham and bean.

Orders must be placed by May 18. Pickup is May 22.

PV memories

There is a Facebook group called Preserving Memories for Greater PV Community. It is not just for the current PV School District, says Connie Johnson for the Greater PV Community.

Johnson said that the goal of this group is: to properly honor and preserve the memories of family members, classmates, friends, faculty members, all support services, administrators and school board members within the Greater Pleasant Valley Community.

Anyone who has attended or worked in any of the schools within the Greater Pleasant Valley Community is eligible to be honored in this group.

Graduation is not a requirement to be honored in this group.

She adds: The Greater Pleasant Valley Community would consist of Chestnuthill, Eldred, Polk and Ross townships and all school facilities from the one-room schoolhouses to pre-PV Chestnuthill, Eldred and Polk school and finally to the Pleasant Valley School District facilities.

Double June event

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, has announced its annual Strawberry Festival and Car Show, happening on June 19, Father’s Day, at 124 Picnic Lane in Kunkletown.

The car show begins at 8 a.m. with registration and ends at 3 p.m. with trophies being awarded.

Breakfast is served from 8 to 10 a.m. and then closes as the church’s worship service begins at 10.

The grill reopens for lunch after worship and will remain open until 6 p.m.

There will be entertainment by the Brian Dean Moore Band from noon to 2 p.m. and The Cramer Brothers from 3 to 5 p.m.

In addition, Laymen’s Fellowship will be holding a raffle.
