Palmerton is checking into the potential purchase of a radar speed sign to help deter drivers from speeding on various roadways in the borough.
Councilman Kris Hoffner said at Thursday’s borough council meeting that the borough plans to buy the device to help monitor speed.
Hoffner said the cost for one device would be about $3,000.
He said neighboring towns such as Slatington have them.
The hope is that such a sign would serve as a speed deterrent to help slow speeding traffic.
Borough police Chief Timothy Kromer said among the main areas where speeding has been an issue are Mauch Chunk Road, Fifth Street, Franklin Avenue, and Delaware Avenue entering the borough from Route 248.
Councilman Andrew Hollywood asked why they can’t just ticket in those high-speed areas.
Kromer said that the problem is enforcement.
He added that a radar speed sign would be a positive addition.
“It’s definitely a good idea,” Kromer said. “It’s just a good reminder to people that they’re going over (the speed limit).”
