Local roundup: Results from May 2

Northwestern earned a dramatic victory in baseball action on Monday, while Lehighton and Pleasant Valley each posted baseball and softball wins.

Elsewhere, Palmerton, Northern Lehigh and Weatherly all picked up victories in softball action.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

Tanner Romig’s sacrifice fly in the 12th inning propelled Northwestern to a 7-6 victory over Pen Argyl.

Benjamin Boyer pitched the final six and two-thirds innings for the Tigers (10-7; 10-5 CL) to pick up the win. Boyer also had a four-hit day for Northwestern.

A four-run fifth put the Tigers ahead by a run until the Green Knights (3-13; 1-12) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Brady Lawless RBI groundout.

Justin Augustus, Robert Croneberger and Josh Farber all had multi-hit games for Northwestern. Croneberger also knocked in two runs.

Pleasant Vy.-Dieruff

A wild pitch in the sixth inning allowed Pleasant Valley to squeeze out a 1-0 victory over Dieruff in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference game.

The Bears (12-5; 10-4 EPC) got a leadoff walk from Austin Ratti, before a Nathan Loch groundout put Ratti in scoring position. Ratti then advanced to third on a Dominic Payan bunt before scoring on Jonathan Brito’s wild pitch. Brito tossed a no-hitter despite giving up the lone Pleasant Valley run.

Blake Walters threw a three-hit shutout and picked up the win for the Bears.

Lehighton-Shenandoah

Lehighton erased a two-run deficit late to prevail 8-6 over Shenandoah Valley.

Aidan Rarick’s RBI single led to Adam Bastone stealing home to tie the game in the sixth inning.

Michael Yeakel hit an RBI single to put Lehighton (7-8; 3-6 SL) ahead, along with two additional insurance runs in the seventh.

Ian Rarick and Noah Bardnt also knocked in runs for the Indians.

The Devils (11-4; 7-3) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Salisbury posted an 8-2 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh,

The Falcons (8-7; 7-7 CL) tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, and then put up six runs in the fifth and sixth to sink the Bulldogs.

Northern Lehigh (1-15; 1-13) catcher Cole Hausman’s double set up an RBI single by Reese Lipsky for the lone Bulldogs earned run of the game. Tyler Fenstermaker reached on an error the next play, allowing another run to score. Jackson Van Norman also got a hit for Northern Lehigh.

Lehighton-Panther Valley

Lehighton rolled to a 17-1 win over Panther Valley.

Mia Snyder was a triple short of hitting for the cycle for the Indians (6-9; 4-5 SL), who as a team produced 17 hits. Snyder finished with a single, double, home run and three RBIs.

Amy Dwojewski (two singles, a triple and an RBI) and Eryn Mertz (two singles, a double and two RBIs) also had three hits, while Makayla Scott (two doubles, three RBIs) and Maggie Pagotto (single, double, four RBIs) both had two hits.

Mikayla Yuricheck paced the Panthers (2-13) with a single, two stolen bases and a run scored, while Liz Rex added the other single.

Northern Lehigh made the most of an early advantage in a 7-3 Colonial League win over Salisbury.

Kaitlyn Stock got the Bulldogs (9-7 overall; 6-6 CL) on the board with a fielder’s choice RBI, which scored Skyeler Horack, who tripled.

Cadence Peters had two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs for Northern Lehigh, while Jordyn Hemingway added two doubles and three runs scored. Hayley Thoder (two singles, two RBIs, a run scored) and Emma Smith (two singles) both added multiple hits.

Bailee Nietz paced the Falcons (4-11; 1-11) with two doubles and a single.

Carly Gaffney’s complete game, four-hit shutout highlighted Palmerton’s 9-0 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Gaffney struck out 14 Roughies and didn’t allow a walk to earn the win. Kaylee Strohl sparked the Bombers (13-5 overall; 9-5 CL) at the plate with two singles, an RBI and three runs scored. Megan Matsko added two runs scored, a single and an RBI.

Cora Soltis finished with two singles for Catty (4-8; 3-8).

Weatherly-Lincoln LA

Weatherly rolled to a 17-0 non-league win over Lincoln Leadership Academy.

Madyson vonFrisch shined at the plate and in the circle for the Wreckers (4-8 overall; 4-7 SL), throwing a no-hitter with six strikeouts and adding three triples and an RBI at the dish.

Kelly Michaels finished with two singles, a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs. Kiley Holman (two singles) and Juliette Bartel (three runs scored, RBI) also played well in the win.

Pleasant Valley-Dieruff

Pleasant Valley cruised to a 15-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Dieruff in three innings.

The Bears erupted for an eight-run opening inning, and then capped the game with a five-run third inning.

Brianca Pridham sparked the Bears (8-8 overall; 8-8 EPC) with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, finishing with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Leadoff hitter Hailey Krock added two singles, a run scored and an RBI.

Danica Getz crossed home plate three times for the Bears, while Jovie Venezuela, Olivia Danner, Sam Ratti and Mandi Beade all scored two runs during the game.

Northwestern-Pen Argyl

A six-run sixth inning pushed Pen Argyl to a 6-5 Colonial League win over Northwestern.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but the Green Knights (10-4 overall; 7-4 CL) rallied with six runs to take the lead.

Sage Toman led the Tigers (12-3; 11-2) with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, which included two doubles and a single as Northwestern pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh to make it a one-run game.

Morgan Farthing added a home run, and also had a single and two RBIs. Isabelle Akelaitis chipped in with a single, double and two RBIs.

Jillian Bradley (solo) and Hailey Frey (two-run), in a pinch-hit appearance, both connected for home runs in the sixth inning.

BOYS LACROSSE

Northwestern-Emmaus

Northwestern kept pace with defending District 11 Class 3A champs Emmaus, but the Hornets escaped with a 9-6 victory.

The scored was knotted at 2-2 entering halftime, but Emmaus (10-6) held a 7-4 edge in the second half.

Blaine Snyder and Cade Christopher both finished with two goals for the Tigers (9-6). Andrew Sabo followed with a goal and an assist, while Andrew Collins added two assists. Taylor Wikert also scored.

Bailen Smargiassi made five saves for Northwestern.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Vy.-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley outscored Pleasant Valley 5-3 in the second half to pull out a 9-8 victory.

Devon Bush led the Bears with four goals in the game. Brielle McInaw also scored three goals for Pleasant Valley. Riley Green recorded the other PV score.

Pleasant Valley won the JV contest 7-2.
