Fundraiser started for 4-year-old mauled by dog
A 4-year-old Jim Thorpe girl is recovering from a crushed orbital socket and punctured skull after she was mauled by a neighbor’s Akita dog last week.
Riley Weakland was playing in the neighbor’s yard with other children when the dog, which was being fed at the time, snapped and aggressively rushed toward the group of kids, according to a fundraiser established through the GoFundMe website.
“Riley was rushed to the hospital, where they did not have the capabilities to handle the severity of her injuries,” Talon Fogal, who organized the fundraiser, said. Weakland was transferred to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, where a plastic surgeon was on call. Staff rushed her to surgery, where it took an unknown number of sutures to close up the wounds.
“The lacerations were initially wide enough to fit the width of a finger in them,” Fogal said.
Weakland’s injuries also included several skull fractures, and a tooth that has been pushed up into the gums. She will undergo surgery to remove the tooth, Fogal said, once her swelling has subsided.
“The family is trying their best to stay positive,” Fogal said. “Riley, fortunately, didn’t lose an eye, suffer brain damage, or sustain injuries that can’t be treated. She was even able to preserve her love for animals.”
Fogal described Weakland as a loving and caring person with a ton of energy and enthusiasm for life.
“Riley loves animals,” she added “She spends her free time cuddling with her two dogs, two cats, and two bunny rabbits.”
The GoFundMe raised just over $5,000 through Friday morning, just three days after it was created. The fundraiser is located at https://bit.ly/3EXPLFF.
Funds raised will be allocated toward Weakland’s initial ambulance transport, four-day hospital stay, and emergency surgical procedures. Money will then be used for future plastic surgery to fix scar tissue, oral surgery to remove the tooth pushed up into Riley’s gum, neurological consults, dental consults and the medications she needs for aftercare.
“Thank you in advance,” Fogal said, “for showing the same kindness, generosity, and compassion that we all know Riley would offer to all the people and animals in her own life.”
