Local Roundup: Results from April 27

Marian and Palmerton posted victories in both baseball and softball action on Wednesday.

BASEBALL

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

James Lordi pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 14 to lead Jim Thorpe to a 3-0 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Lordi also contributed at the plate, delivering an RBI single in the third inning.

The Olympians opened the scoring in the first on a Jack Edwards RBI single. The winners also received a pair of hits from Lawrence Baldassano.

The win upped Thorpe’s record to 5-7, while the Tide dropped to 7-6.

Marian-Minersville

Marian used an eight-run third inning to help gain a 10-7 Schuylkill League victory over Minersville.

Chase Petrilyak blasted a homer for the Colts, who improved to 8-5.

Joey Walko and Michael Gelatko both collected two hits and knocked in a pair of runs for the winners. Walko also scored two runs.

Marian also received three hits from Jake Bobish.

Northwestern-Moravian

Tanner Romig pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out 10 as Northwestern blanked Moravian Academy, 8-0, in Colonial League action.

Romig also helped his own cause, collecting a double and two RBIs at the plate.

The Tigers also received two hits and a pair of runs from Benjamin Boyer. Zachory Russo added a hit, a run and an RBI, while Dylan Witkowski chipped in with a double and a run.

Northwestern’s third-straight win pushed its overall record over the .500 mark at 8-7.

Salisbury-Palmerton

Jacob Grammes knocked in all four of Palmerton’s runs as the Blue Bombers edged Salisbury, 4-3, in a Colonial League contest.

Grammes opened the scoring in the home first when he delivered a two-run single. He added a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the fifth.

Garrett Horvath was solid on the mound for the winners. In five innings, he allowed just three hits, two walks and an unearned run while striking out nine.

Palmerton received two hits and a run from Kaleb Eitner.

The Bombers now own a 9-5 overall record, and a 7-5 mark in the league.

Northern Lehigh-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley got off to a fast start and cruised to an 11-1 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

Joe DiRusso had two hits, including a two-run double during a six-run first inning for the Panthers.

Liam Buck also contributed three hits, one a double, for the winners.

For the Bulldogs, Tyler Fenstermaker had an RBI double.

Nolehi is now 1-13, while Saucon is 10-2.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Blue Mountain broke a tie game with two runs in the seventh inning to pull out a 3-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

Mike Myro tripled home the game-ahead run in the seventh and later scored on a wild pitch.

After the Eagles plated a first-inning run, Tamaqua knotted the score in the sixth when Mason Ligenza raced home on an error.

Ligenza, Wyatt Steigerwalt, Luke Kane and Ryan Vecolitis all had hits for the Blue Raiders (1-11).

SOFTBALL

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Leah Crowley’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Tamaqua to a 10-8 Schuylkill League upset of Blue Mountain.

Hailey Williams had a single, a double and a home run, knocked in three runs and scored three times for the Blue Raiders (5-8; 4-5). Gabby Robb added a single, double, a run scored and two RBIs, while sister Kolbe Robb had leadoff singles in both the third and sixth innings that jump started both of Tamaqua’s four-run innings.

The Eagles (12-2 overall; 6-2 SL) got home runs from Autumn Handwerk, Anna Laughlin and Ava Peel.

Marian received hits from eight different players, and Megan Kelly turned in another solid pitching effort as Marian posted a 12-2 Schuylkill League victory over Minersville.

Jackie Guth had two hits, one a double, for the Fillies, who opened the game with a four-run first inning.

Julia Meiss added a double, while Kelly allowed six hits to help Marian improve to 8-4 overall, and 5-3 in the league.

No. Lehigh-Saucon Valley

Marisa Maehrer collected three hits and knocked in two runs to highlight Northern Lehigh’s offense in a 17-3 Colonial League victory over Saucon Valley.

Jeweliana Andrews added two hits, a pair of runs and three RBIs to the Bulldog cause, while Cadence Peters also contributed two hits and three RBIs.

The Bulldogs, who opened the scoring with six runs in the first inning, also received two hits (one a triple), two runs and two RBIs from Jordyn Hemingway.

Others aiding the big win included Hayley Thoder (two hits, three runs), Kaitlyn Stock (two hits), Arabella Heintzelman (three runs), Haylie Fenstermaker (two runs, two RBIs) and Skyeler Horack (two runs).

Emma Smith earned the pitching win, striking out seven.

The victory was Nolehi’s third straight, and upped its record to 8-5.

Salisbury-Palmerton

Palmerton rallied to earn a 4-3 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

The Blue Bombers trailed 3-0 entering the fifth, but Sydney Frantz drilled a two-run homer during a three-run inning that tied the score.

The host team then pushed across a run in the sixth to provide the winning margin.

Madalynn Moyer had two hits and scored twice for Palmerton, while winning pitcher Carly Gaffney added a pair of hits.

The win boosted Palmerton’s overall record to 11-5, and 7-5 in the league.

Panther Vy.-Sch. Haven

Schuylkill Haven rolled to a 9-0 Schuylkill League victory over Panther Valley.

Emma Osatchuck led the Hurricanes (7-6 overall; 4-4 SL) with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, in which she was a home run shy of the cycle.

Brenna Beshock paced the Panthers (2-10; 0-7) with two singles. Morgan O’Brien and Mikayla Yuricheck added the other Panther hits.

Taylor Welsh had Jim Thorpe’s number in Pottsville’s 9-0 Schuylkill League win.

Welsh pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout that included seven strikeouts.

Welsh helped herself out at the plate with two hits, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Mara Levins, Kristin Pompa, Alexia Rohrman and Tara McLean accounted for the Olympians’ hits.

Jim Thorpe slips to 4-9 overall (1-8 SL), while Pottsville jumps to 8-6 (5-4).

Nativity-Weatherly

A total of 29 strikeouts were recorded between the two pitchers, but it was Nativity that pushed across enough runs to pull away for a 5-2 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

Both pitchers were in control, as Wreckers’ pitcher Madyson vonFrisch had 14 strikeouts, and her counterpart Emily Krammes of Nativity recorded 15 strikeouts.

Mikaya Beadle had three doubles and scored a run for the Green Wave (5-7 overall; 5-3 SL)

Kelly Michael reached base twice (a walk, single) and scored twice for Weatherly (3-6; 1-6), while vonFrisch walked, singled, stole a base and knocked in a run.
