Local Roundup: Results from April 25

Marian and Panther Valley both gained walk-off wins in baseball action on Monday.

Pleasant Valley and Northern Lehigh, meanwhile, received strong pitching performances to also earn victories.

BASEBALL

Pleasant Vy.-Stroudsburg

Nate Mostosky pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Pleasant Valley to an 8-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over rival Stroudsburg.

Mostosky walked just one and struck out seven in his 83-pitch performance at Coca-Cola Park.

Jake Gethen had two hits, including a two-run single during a five-run sixth inning. Jack Smale added a triple and two runs scored, while Ryan Kymer chipped in with a hit, run and RBI.

The win lifted the Bears record to 10-4, which clinched a district playoff berth. The Mounties dropped to 5-8.

Moravian-Northern Lehigh

Zachary Chamberlain’s dominant pitching performance lifted Northern Lehigh to a 3-1 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

Chamberlain struck out 16 and allowed just three hits and one earned run without surrendering a walk to earn the win, while Cole Hausman finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two walks for the Bulldogs (1-11),

Jack Tosh, Nicklaus Buskirk and Brayden Tocci all had two hits apiece for Northern Lehigh, while Connor Simms scored twice, and Tocci once in the win.

Charles Bingham was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Lions (1-11), who led 1-0 after the first inning but were shutout the rest of the way.

Williams Vy.-Panther Vy.

After giving up the lead, Panther Valley pushed across a seventh-inning run to gain a 3-2 Schuylkill League walk-off victory over Williams Valley.

PV starting pitcher Stephen Hood had a shutout through six innings, but was touched for a run in the seventh. Hood allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 12. Brad Hood relieved, and the Vikings rallied to tie the game.

The Panthers, however, won the game in the home seventh. Tyler Black reached second on an error and moved to third on a single by Brad Hood. Michael Pascoe delivered a hard-hit ball down the third base line to knock in the game-winning run.

Brad Hood finished with three hits and an RBI, while Stephen Hood also knocked in a run.

Panther Valley upped its record to 9-3, while Williams Valley fell to 2-9.

Schuylkill Haven-Marian

Marian’s Michael Gelatko hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Colts to a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory over Schuylkill Haven.

Trailing 2-1, Andrew Baran reached second base before Gelatko delivered his game-winning blast.

The late dramatics made a winner of Mason Gibson, who went the distance on the mound. Gibson scattered nine hits and allowed just two runs while striking out three.

Gelatko finished with a pair of hits, while Jake Bobish added an RBI single - which scored Chase Petrilyak.

Haven was led by Ryan Scaeffer and Jack Davis, who both collected three hits.

Marian is now 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the league, while the Hurricanes slip to 9-2 and 4-2.

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Collin McGee’s big day at the plate helped North Schuylkill register a 14-2 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

McGee had three hits, one a double, and knocked in three runs for the Spartans, who used a seven-run fifth inning to put the game away. Teammate Jake Hall added a pair of hits and three RBIs.

For the Blue Raiders, Cian McLaughlin and Gianni Valentine both had a hit and an RBI. Luke Kane and Lucas Milot each chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

Tamaqua fell to 1-9, while North Schuylkill improved to 6-4.

Lehighton-Pottsville

A bases-loaded walk to Brenan Adams with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning pushed across the game-winning run to give Pottsville a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

The Indians tied the game in the top of the seventh when, with two outs, Jon Light walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Lehighton starting pitcher Michael Yeakel tossed 4 1/3 innings, giving up just two hits, three walks and no runs, while striking out three.

The Tribe’s Carter Birnbaum finished with two hits.

The Crimson Tide improved to 7-5, while Lehighton dropped to 6-7.

Minersville-Weatherly

Minersville scored double-digit runs in two innings and rolled to a 30-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Miners (6-7; 4-3) scored 19 of their runs on walks, as they finished with only nine hits.

Winning pitcher Jason Cullen tossed a three-inning perfect game.

The loss dropped the Wreckers to 1-8 overall, and 1-5 in the league.

SOFTBALL

Lehighton-Pottsville

A huge second inning carried Pottsville to a 12-5 Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

Taylor Welsh smacked two home runs – including a two-run shot in an eight-run second inning – and drove in three for the Tide (7-6). Mia Bowers (RBI) doubled twice among her three hits, while Victories Fuss also collected a pair of doubles, drove in two and scored twice. Faith Toothaker (double) and Tayla Jones each added two hits, two RBIs and scored a run for Pottsville.

Addison Chavanic (RBI) and Amy Dwojewski (run scored) had two hits apiece for the Tribe (4-8), who led 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second frame. Maggie Pagotto, Eryn Mertz and Madyson Bergdahl each doubled for Lehighton.

Williams Valley cruised to a 17-0 win over Panther Valley in three innings.

Sage Smeltz was 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and four RBIs for the Vikings – who scored 11 runs in the first inning – while Gracie Ruch also added three hits (double, two singles) for Williams Valley (9-2).

Ruch (two innings) and Smeltz (one) also combined to no-hit the Panthers (1-10).

Schuylkill Haven-Marian

Marian’s Morgan Kelly blanked Schuylkill Haven for six innings, but the Hurricanes rallied for three runs in the seventh to pull out a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory.

Skylar Bayliff had two hits and Chloey Homan added a triple for Haven, which won its fourth straight game and improved to 5-6.

For the Fillies, Jackie Guth finished with a pair of hits, while Kelly had a double. Alise Heisey and Julia Meiss each picked up an RBI.

The loss, Marian’s third straight, dropped its record to 7-4.

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Shut out for six innings, North Schuylkill pushed across four runs in the seventh inning to gain a 4-1 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders broke a scoreless tie with a run in the home fifth when Hailey Williams knocked in Riley MacMillan with an RBI single.

The score remained 1-0 until the Spartans used a Johannah Taylor sacrifice fly, a Maddie Hall RBI single, a Hailey Weikel fielder’s choice RBI and a run-scoring passed ball to take the lead.

Bryn Clifford suffered the loss, walking four and striking out 12. Williams ended with both hits for the Raiders (4-8).

North Schuylkill hurler Morgan Dinger allowed just two hits while striking out 15.

Minersville-Weatherly

Hailee Levonas had two doubles and two triples to help lead Minersville to an 11-1 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Miners (4-7; 4-3) also received two triples and a pair of runs from Abigail Adams.

Adrianna Dotzel had a single and scored a run for the Wreckers (3-5; 1-5), while Kelly Michaels had the team’s other hit.

Jim Thorpe-Lourdes

Cassidy Grimes and Hailee Brown both had three hits and scored three runs to lead Lourdes to a 13-3 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Avery Dawkus added two hits and three RBIs for the Red Raiders, who scored in every inning but one.

For the Olympians, Jada Mahmde finished with a couple hits and two runs, while Tara McLean and Kristin Pompa both added a hit and an RBI.

Jim Thorpe-Palmerton

Palmerton closed out the season with a 5-0 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Justin Sebelin, Riley Fallon and Tyler Shollenberger posted singles’ victories for the Bombers (4-8), while Tyler Hager and Colby Chadwick combined to win in doubles’ play.

The Olympians end the year with a 3-12 record.

Freedom-Pleasant Valley

The Pleasant Valley girls posted a victory over Freedom in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet, while the Patriots won the boys’ competition by criteria after the final score was tied.

Reese Ruggiero (pole vault, long jump, triple jump) picked up three individual event victories for the PV girls, who won 96-54. Nyia Moon (100, 200) and De’Nair Drew (100H, 300H) also had multiple individual event wins. The trio were also part of the winning 1600 relay team, with Moon and Drew also on the first-place 400 relay squad.

Dylan Dixon posted victories in the 110H and long jump in the boys’ meet for the Bears, who finished the contest with the team score tied 75-75. The Patriots scored the win based on most first-place finishes with 10 to PV’s eight.
