Tamaqua council appoints borough staff
Tamaqua Borough Council appointed a number of individuals to the borough staff during a meeting last week.
The borough is also seeking employees to fill vacant positions.
As for appointments, Austin Fogel will serve as the water treatment plant work leader.
Aaron Coggiano was transferred to the water treatment plant operator position and Todd Macalush was transferred to the wastewater treatment plant work leader position. Both transfers are permanent.
Council voted to retain Tyson Nalesnik as a full-time chief mechanic once he completes his probationary period on May 3.
Those hired to the staff of the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool at Bungalow Park include Emma Coccio, assistant pool manager, $15 per hour; Tori Seiger, pool clerk, $9 per hour plus 25 cents per hour for each year of service; Nicole Aguero-Ramirez, head lifeguard, $11 per hour; and Emily Breslin, MaKayla Kester, Emily Newton, Alex Porambo, Josie Shickram and Brynn Gigli, all lifeguards, $10 per hour plus 25 cents per hour for each year of service.
The borough will advertise for part-time maintenance workers who will be paid $12.50 per hour.
A part-time utility clerk and a water treatment plant operator are also sought.
In his report to council, Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt noted that most of the violations at 226 Owl Creek Road have been corrected.
Several neighbors voiced concerns about the property to council last month. One resident referred to the home as a “hazard.”
“There was an issue with rubbish and garbage and there was also an exposed foundation wall,” Steigerwalt noted.
Borough code enforcement officers visited the home and found the issues had been resolved, he said.
“They’ve also been to court with that person to get him to move quicker,” Steigerwalt noted.
Steigerwalt added that demolition of 252 W. Cottage Ave. is progressing.
“It’s going slow but it’s a tedious job and it’s a lot of handwork,” Steigerwalt said.

Finally, Tamaqua Police Chief Michael Hobbs announced that borough police will participate in National Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at the 320 E. Broad St. station.

All expired or unwanted controlled, noncontrolled or over-the-counter medications will be accepted. Liquid products should remain sealed in their original containers.
The event is sponsored by Schuylkill County Sheriff Joe Groody and Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol.
