Mostosky helps Bears top PM West

Nate Mostosky’s walk-up music is fitting.

As Jay-Z’s ‘Public Service Announcement’ flows from the speakers at Pleasant Valley’s baseball field, Mostosky is greeted with a line that suits the junior well.

Allow me to reintroduce myself.

Most of the Bears faithful hadn’t forgotten.

But Mostosky restored their faith Thursday in his season debut, helping Pleasant Valley come away with an 11-5 victory over Pocono Mountain West in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Mostosky - who suffered an injury to his non-throwing hand that required surgery in February - was just cleared to play on Wednesday.

His first game action of the season came Thursday when he entered with the bases loaded and one out in the second inning and the Bears (9-3) holding a 3-2 lead over the Panthers.

Mostosky worked out of trouble with a strikeout and a grounder to third base to end the inning and keep PV’s one-run lead intact.

“It was special, don’t get me wrong,” Mostosky said. “Because I waited so long to be back. But I was nervous, I’ll say that. I didn’t really think too much about it. They’re a good team, give them credit. I didn’t know what to expect when I came in. I just kind of threw it. I’ve been playing baseball my whole life, so I kind of know. I’ve been in that situation. I like situations like that.”

Mostosky pitched four solid innings for a Bears’ squad that suffered a 13-2 loss to Emmaus on Tuesday. He also had a hit, scored three runs and walked twice.

The Panthers (3-6) loaded the bases in the second, third and fourth innings, but were only able to produce three runs.

A pickoff throw from Mostosky nailed a West runner at first base for the third out of the third inning, and a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat in the fourth as Pleasant Valley held a 5-3 lead.

“Nate’s a big part of what we do,” Bears mentor TJ Murphy said of Mostosky, who finished with five strikeouts while allowing one earned run. “And if we want to qualify for the playoffs, and advance in the playoffs, we need him. And he’s going to have to be a big part of what we do.

“Nate has been throwing bullpens, his arm has obviously been conditioned, he’s been ready to go throughout the time that he’s been injured. He just had to step in and do what he does. He’s pitched in big moments for us. He said he might have been a little nervous, but it’s to be expected. I was proud of him. I thought he did a good job.”

Pleasant Valley picked up some breathing room in the bottom of the fourth inning when Andrew Meitzler (2-for-3, four RBIs, walk) delivered a two-out, two-run single to score Mostosky and Nathan Loch to push the lead to 7-3.

After a Ben Mostosky RBI double in the fifth made it 8-3, PM West threatened again in the top of the sixth.

Ryder Bray’s (2-for-4, two RBIs) RBI single with the bases loaded made it 8-4, and Ian McHugh’s sacrifice fly cut it to 8-5.

But Ryan Kymer worked out of a jam with runners at second and third, inducing a grounder to first base to end the inning.

The Bears tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Jack Smale’s (2-for-3, two runs scored, triple) second RBI of the game.

Meitzler opened the scoring with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning.

“We just need to stay within ourselves,” said Metizler. “We can’t do too much, because we have guys that will make plays anywhere on the field with the bat.

“We got into trouble at times, but we were able to get out of it, which is great for us. Hopefully we can just keep this up.”

HITTERS

... In addition to Meitzler and Smale, Nate Loch (two runs scored), Dominic Payan (RBI, run scored) and Ryan Kymer (RBI, run scored) had multiple hits for PV.

RUN, RUN, RUN

... The Bears had nine stolen bases in the game. Kymer, Loch and Nate Mostosky had two apiece. The approach typifies the Bears’ mentality. “We’re an aggressive team,” said Murphy. “We’re going to be aggressive at the plate, we’re going to be aggressive on the bases. Nate Loch, our leadoff hitter, broke the school record for stolen bases in a season in our last game. He’s been tremendous, and as a team, we run a lot. We have to get on, we try to get over. In the beginning of the season, for the most part we’ve been able to score runs in the first couple of innings, and then our bats go dormant. Today, we scored a run in every inning.”
