Local Roundup: Results from April 8

Northwestern posted wins in both baseball and softball action on Friday.

Palmerton and Jim Thorpe also gained baseball victories, while Marian triumphed in softball. Lehighton also picked up a win in tennis action.

BASEBALL

Palmerton-Northern Lehigh

Palmerton won its fourth straight game by holding off rival Northern Lehigh, 6-3, in a Colonial League contest.

The Blue Bombers jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first inning on sacrifice flies by Garret Horvath and Connor Beahm and never trailed.

Trey Sterling collected two hits, one a double, scored a run and knocked in one for the winners. Nate Steinmetz also contributed a hit and two RBIs, while Cole Serfass added a hit and two runs.

Lucas Netznik came on in relief in the second inning and allowed just two earned runs and no walks while striking out six to earn the victory.

For the Bulldogs, who rallied for two runs in the home seventh, Jack Tosh and Brayden Tocci both finished with a pair of hits.

Palmerton improved to 4-2, and Nolehi dropped to 0-6.

Catasauqua-Northwestern

A strong outing from Ben Boyer helped lift Northwestern to 4-2 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Boyer tossed six innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six.

The Tigers actually trailed after Catty scored twice in the fourth inning, but Chase Moyer’s two-run hit in the bottom of the frame tied the game for Northwestern. The winners then grabbed the lead an inning later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eli Zimmerman, and added an insurance run on Dylan Witkowski’s RBI single.

Moyer finished with a pair of hits as the Tigers improved to 2-3.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

A four-run sixth inning propelled Jim Thorpe to a 5-4 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville

James Lordi delivered the big blow for the Olympians in the decisive sixth when he drilled a three-run double.

Lordi also picked up the pitching victory, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. Adam Romanchik tossed two perfect innings of relief to earn the save.

Offensively for Jim Thorpe, Drew Wimmer had a single and scored twice, Jack Edwards and Tanner Yurchak both singled and scored a run; and Lawrence Baldassano had a single and an RBI. The Olympians also stole six bases in the game, including two apiece by Wimmer and Ian Henkels

Shenandoah Valley-Marian

Shenandoah Valley’s Kaleb Maksimik was dominant on the mound in leading his team to a 9-0 Schuylkill League victory over Marian.

Maksimik pitched six-and-a-third scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out 10.

The two teams were knotted in a 0-0 tie until the Devils pushed across a run in the fifth. In the sixth, the winners blew the game open with eight runs. Owen Kosar and Brady Najda both had two hits for Shenandoah, while Nicholas Mikita and Joseph Vevasis both knocked in two runs.

Marian’s Jake Bobish reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Mason Gibson pitched well in defeat, allowing just one run and three hits in five innings of work.

The Devils are now 4-0, with the Colts dropping to 3-2.

SOFTBALL

Catasauqua-Northwestern

Northwestern’s Morgan Farthing collected her 100th career hit in a 13-1 Colonial League rout of Catasauqua.

Farthing had a pair of hits, one a double, to reach the century mark.

Marissa Christman banged out three hits, one a double, and knocked in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who remained undefeated at 6-0. Sage Toman added a hit and three RBIs, while Josephine Wehr chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

Brynn Balliet pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five, to earn the victory.

Shenandoah-Marian

Morgan Kelly tossed a two-hit shutout and struck out 11 as Marian rolled to a 10-0 Schuylkill League victory over Shenandoah.

Kelly helped her own cause with a big day at the plate as well, banging out three hits - including a home run and a double - knocking in three runs and scoring two.

Alise Heisey and Jackie Guth also had three hit days for the Fillies. Heisey’s performance included a home, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Guth scored three times and drove in one run. Eden Fleming (single, double, RBI) and Anna Grabosky (single, two RBIs) also contributed to the win.

Lourdes-Lehighton

Lourdes Regional edged Lehighton in a Schuylkill League game, 3-2.

Hailee Brown tossed a complete-game four-hitter for Lourdes, striking out seven. Abbie Miller pitched well in defeat for the Indians, allowing just one earned run and striking out nine.

Eryn Mertz had a hit and an RBI for Lehighton. Addison Chavanic had a hit and scored a run.

Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

Taylor Welsh and Lily Heinbach combined on a one-hitter as Pottsville blanked Jim Thorpe, 13-0, in Schuylkill League action.

Welsh worked three innings of no-hit ball, striking five. Heimbach struck out two in two innings of work.

Welsh was also the offensive star for the Tide with three hits and five RBIs. Jade Weiss added two hits and three RBIs.

Kristin Pompa’s fourth-inning single was the lone hit for the Olympians.

TENNIS

Lehighton-Notre Dame ES

Aaron Milller and Ben Slaw both picked up singles wins to lead Lehighton to a 4-1 victory over Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg.

Miller didn’t drop a game in posting a straight-set win, while Slaw also triumphed in straight sets.

The Indians, now 6-3, also received straight-set victories from both of their doubles teams.

Moravian Academy lost only one game combined against Jim Thorpe to cruise to a 5-0 victory.

The Lions swept singles play with three 6-0, 6-0 decision.

The loss dropped the Olympians to 2-8.

BOYS LACROSSE

Easton-Northwestern

Andrew Sabo had two goals and two assists, but it wasn’t enough as Northwestern dropped a 10-7 non-league decision to Easton.

Cade Christopher added two goals and a helper, while Austin Sosnovik contributed a pair of goals for the Tigers, who fell to 2-3. Blaine Snyder also picked up a goal.

The Rovers, now 6-2, received four goals and two assists from Trent Griffin.
