Lehighton Band to hold free spring concert at First Presbyterian Church

The Lehighton Band will present its annual Spring Concert at the First Presbyterian Church, Third and Mahoning streets, at 1:30 p.m. April 10.

The church has graciously offered its church to the band free of charge as part of its ongoing mission to show outreach to their community.

The band is grateful to the church for this offer, and is excited to perform there for the very first time, as the previous location of its concert is no longer available to the public.

The band will open the program with the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The concert arrangement of our national anthem was arranged by Jack Stamp.

The band will then play the first march of the afternoon, presenting Pieter Leemans’ “March of the Belgian Parachutists.” “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst will follow and involves “March,” “Song Without Words,” “Song of the Blacksmith” and “Fantasia” on the “Dargason.”

The band will then switch gears as it breaks away from classical music and heads to the realm of pop music and will present “Pop and Rock Legends: Neil Diamond.” The medley includes “America,” “Sweet Caroline,” “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” “Cherry, Cherry” and “I’m a Believer.” Following this will be a piece of concert music called “Montage” by John Tatgenhorst.

“A Leroy Anderson Portrait” will kick off the next section of the concert. The piece includes “Serenade,” “The Syncopated Clock,” “Blue Tango” and “Bugler’s Holiday.” A hymn style piece from the movie “We Were Soldiers” called “Mansions of the Lord” will be the next selection, and will be followed by another movie piece, “Selections from The Greatest Showman,” including “The Greatest Show,” “A Million Dreams,” “Never Enough,” “This is Me” and “From Now On.”

One of the most widely played modern composers, Steven Reineke, is up next with his concert piece called “River of Life.” George and Ira Gershwin get the spotlight next with a medley of their most popular numbers titled “Gershwin in Concert.”

The band will continue with a song called “Ringgold Rhapsody,” which includes Johnny Schmoker and the ever-popular “Schnitzelbank.” The song by Henry Gass was written for the Ringgold Band of Pennsylvania, and has become a band standard for many community bands. The band will once again return to the pop genre with “Barry Manilow on Tour,” which includes “Jump Shout Boogie,” “Even Now,” “Daybreak,” “Ready to Take a Chance Again” and “Copacabana.”

The band will wrap up the concert with “Red, White and Brass,” a medley of American music originally arranged for the Canadian Brass. It includes “American Patrol,” “Home on the Range,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Boy,” “Simple Gifts” and the “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The final march is a John Philip Sousa standard march titled “Hands Across the Sea.”

The Lehighton Band presents this concert free of charge, but a freewill offering will be accepted.

The band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley.
