Palmerton borough council is applying for a grant to the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau to approve the entrance to town.
Borough Manager Donna McGarry said it would include the planting of grass, perennial flowers, flowering shrubbery and an additional bed with a tree and shrubbery.
The entrance to town project would be $4,630, and is a 50-50 grant, meaning it would cost the borough $2,315.
The second project McGarry referenced was fencing at the basketball court next to Elmer Valo Baseball Field on South Third Street.
She said to refurbish the court and backboards would cost $3,245, and added there’s a 4-foot fence that would need to be replaced at a cost of $5,125.
McGarry said that $8,370 would be the full amount, and that the borough would owe half of that, or $4,185.
However, Councilwoman Holly Hausman Sell said she believes that before the borough would spend money on the fencing, she’d like to see the funds go toward better backboards.
Hausman-Sell said the borough’s youth like to play basketball, and they are looking for a real basketball court with backboards that have some real give to them.
McGarry said the plan is to follow council’s direction for different improvements to the basketball court than she had originally proposed.
She said she will look into new backboards, and come back with a new project cost at next month’s council meeting.
