West Penn Diner under new ownership

A diner in the Tamaqua area is under new ownership.

The West Penn Diner located at 749 Penn Drive changed hands last Friday.

It is now owned by Glen and Rose Moyer, and managed by Nick Orendach.

The trio took over the establishment from former owner Walter Zlomsowitch.

Zlomsowitch previously purchased the former Maggie’s Kitchen in July 2019.

The Moyers, of New Tripoli, said they plan to be reorganized in about two weeks.

In the meantime, they noted the diner remains open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast and lunch.

Eventually, they said the plan is to be open seven days a week, including possibly some evenings.

Glen said he’s friends with Orendach, who has 13 years experience previously running the New Tripoli and Schnecksville diners.

“We’ve been looking for something for two years,” Glen Moyer said. “This was a good opportunity.”

Rose said “we want to be a staple in the community. We just want to stabilize it.”

Orendach said they will tweak the menu and offer homemade foods such as stuffed cabbage, chicken potpie, pork and sauerkraut, sausage gravy, and creamed chipped beef.

Rose said they’ve been handing out surveys.

“We’re being welcomed by the community,” she said. “We’re people-based, customer-based.”

Glen said he believes the diner is situated in the perfect location, as it’s essentially the only game in town.

“We’re in a blue-collar area,” he said. “We’re blue-collar people serving blue-collar people.”

In the near future, Rose said they plan to serve Leiby’s ice cream, and added there will eventually be a pavilion with picnic benches.

Rose said they also plan to serve homemade desserts like cakes and pies.

She said there will also be lunch and dinner specials for which customers are urged to check out West Penn Diner on Facebook.

Along with dine-in, the diner offers takeout orders, which can be made by calling 570-818-2811.
