Bowmanstown tables consultant fees for grant

A decision to apply for consultant fees under the historical grant for Bowmanstown Borough Hall was tabled Tuesday.

Council had previously authorized borough treasurer/assistant secretary Tara Takerer to apply for consultant fees under the historical grant.

However, a quote came in at $16,200. The borough would have to pay over $8,000 to have it completed since the grant is a 50/50 match.

Mayor Zach Snyder asked what benefit there would be to the borough if the building would be listed on the national registry.

Councilwoman Kara Scott said it would allow the borough more access to getting grant money.

However, Snyder suggested council may want to wait until it finds out about the fire company.

Scott said she believes council needs more time as it seems the situation is unclear.

In August, council on a 4-0 vote agreed to pursue listing Bowmanstown Borough Hall on the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation.

At that time, Scott expressed her desire to see the borough pursue the grants with the hope it will lead to the distinction.

Councilman Rob Moyer agreed at that time it was worth pursuing the matter.

At a special workshop earlier that month, council on a 3-1 vote agreed to have the Bowmanstown Fire Department move forward - with the borough included - to reapply for grants in its attempt to build a new fire station.

Resident Kerry Solt told council he would hate to see the current borough hall building be turned into apartments, as it’s a landmark.

Scott said she was concerned about the playgrounds and basketball courts, which she said are used heavily. She said “this building is almost iconic.”

Scott said while she wants to see the fire department get the grant money for a new fire station, she worries what may become of the borough hall building.

However, Snyder suggested at that time that even if the borough would no longer use the building as borough hall, that doesn’t mean the borough has to sell it.
