Opinion: Administration can’t keep immigration policy out of the public eye

It didn’t seem possible that the optics surrounding the Biden administration’s open border policy could get any worse.

But then new video surfaced of illegal immigrants being transported to different locations around the country through the darkness of night.

President Biden’s two designated point persons on the border crisis - Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Vice President Kamala Harris, the president’s hand-picked border czar - added to another disastrous policy week for the Biden presidency.

The president’s open-border policies have led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with 2 million illegal immigrants from dozens of countries crossing over from Mexico last year alone. The new video footage reveals that every night illegals are being transported on secret charter flights into unannounced destinations around the country.

With the flights shrouded in secret, identities of the shuttled male immigrants are not known. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents did arrest two men on the FBI’s terrorism watch list last year as they tried to cross the southern U.S. border.

A recently released bodycam video from Sgt. Michael Hamborsky, a Westchester County, New York, police officer, shows the secretive transport of adult males flown into that airport from Fort Bliss, Texas. The video, obtained under a Freedom of Information Act, also includes conversations on the tarmac at the airport last August.

During the 51-minute tape, Hamborsky questions a dozen federal contractors who are overseeing migrants disembarking and boarding charter buses. In one segment, Hamborsky asks another contractor about the transports.

The contractor replies that a lot of it is “down-low stuff” being done so as not to attract media attention.

“You’re trying to figure out what this is?” asks one of the bus drivers. “Good luck with that.”

Besides Westchester, Hamborsky learned that some were also being bused to Delaware, Virginia, New Jersey and Maryland.

Another embarrassment for the Biden administration was Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit last week to Honduras for the inauguration of Xiomara Castro, its new socialist president. The visit came the same day that the world marked the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazis’ Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland, where an estimated one-third of the world’s Jewish population was murdered by Nazi Germany in World War II.

Some in Castro’s inner circle, including running mate Salvador Nasralla, made statements in the past that were offensive to Jewish people and Israel. During Nasralla’s 2017 run for the presidency, which he lost, his wife Iroshka Elvir had to apologize to Jewish organizations for praising Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

She denied stating that she admired Hitler.

After landing in Honduras, Harris did tweet a tribute on the Holocaust but that did not appease many Jewish officials, including New York Rep. Lee Zeldin, who described Harris’ trip to Honduras on Holocaust Memorial Day as “totally disgusting and unacceptable.”

“It’s sad that the Biden administration is going out of its way to embrace the country’s troubling new leaders, but couldn’t be bothered to show support when Honduras took bold steps to strengthen its bond with Israel (during the previous administration),” Zeldin said.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stirred up even more controversy last week on the immigration crisis, which is the worst it’s been in 20 years. During a visit to the distressed Yuma border region in Arizona, Mayorkas told agents there that he understood the waves of immigrants pouring through the border had made their jobs harder.

But many agents, angered by a lack of resources, overcrowding of immigrants, and the feeling they are being demonized by President Biden, made it known to Mayorkas that the administration was not administering the law.

One worker turned his back on the DHS secretary.

Another leaked video of the Mayorkas visit reflects the anger and frustration of border agents.

“For evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing,” one agent stated. “Good men are doing nothing. You’re allowing illegal aliens to be dropped off in communities.”

Judging from the reactions to two of Biden’s hand-picked subordinates last week, much of the public sentiment in rural and Main Street America is favoring the overworked and disrespected border agents.
