Carbon County names February ‘love a dog for life’ month

Are you looking for a new man’s best friend?

Why not check out the Carbon County Animal Shelter.

During the county commissioners’ meeting on Thursday, the board made the move to name February “Love a dog for life” month in honor of dog adoptions in the hopes of finding more dogs in the shelter forever homes. The county animal shelter is located at 63 Broad St., Nesquehoning, on top of the Broad Mountain off Route 93.

The motion also approved lowering the adoption fee from $100 to $50 for the month of February.

Carbon County began naming February as a special month at the shelter in 2014 and it helped increase the number of adoptions in previous years.

As of Friday afternoon, the shelter has nine dogs available for adoption, but that number can fluctuate quickly.

For more information on the shelter or to adopt a dog, visit the shelter between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays or check them out on Facebook at Carbon County Animal Shelter PA. The staff asks that you call ahead at 570-325-4828 to make sure someone is available since sometimes they are called out for a rescue.

Donations received

In other shelter matters, Commissioner Rocky Ahner reported that the shelter has received approximately $9,750 in donations in recent weeks.

Of that amount, $2,000 came from Trinity Lutheran Church; $5,000 from Silvia Davis in memory of her sister, Linda L. Solt; $820 from the Willard Richards family in memory of Willard Richards; $1,430 was donated by various people through the Betty White Challenge; and $500 from several people for supplies.

“I think it shows about how the people feel about our Carbon County shelter,” Ahner said.
