Effort man charged with DUI, assault in road rage incident

An Effort man has been charged for his role in a road rage incident in Chestnuthill Township.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Brendon Smith of the Pennsylvania State Police, Fern Ridge barracks in the case against Barrett Steltz:

At 3:49 p.m. Dec. 12, Smith was dispatched to a road rage incident in the area of Shenandoah Trail, Chestnuthill Township.

One of the vehicles had left the road striking the victim’s mailbox in the 1300 block of North Rocky Mountain Drive. The driver, Steltz, 40, failed to stop and continued to travel on North Rocky Mountain Drive.

The homeowners followed Steltz to Shenandoah Trail near its intersection with Dalton Lane, where Steltz stopped.

Steltz put his vehicle in reverse and struck the victims’ vehicle at its right rear passenger door, and then fled the scene and pulled into a driveway on Shenandoah Trail and entered his residence.

Troopers went to his residence, and found him visibly intoxicated and in an irate state.

Due to his irate state and refusal to cooperate, no standardized field sobriety tests were completed.

When police attempted to take him into custody on suspicion of DUI, he resisted arrest.

Police told Steltz that they were going to use Taser if he failed to comply. He stopped resisting and was transported to the Monroe County Correctional Facility for a blood draw.

Steltz faces charges of DUI/unsafe driving; DUI; resist arrest/other law enforcement; accidents involving damage to attended vehicle or property; simple assault; disregard traffic lane; careless driving; driver to stop damage; fail to stop and or render aid to those involved in an accident;

He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 25 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
