Tamaqua man arraigned after health center outburst

A Tamaqua man is in Schuylkill County Prison after he caused a disturbance at St. Luke’s in Mahanoy City.

Matthew Elison, 20, was arraigned Monday by Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker and bail set at $50,000 straight cash. He is charged with aggravated assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, both felonies, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors, and public drunkenness, a summary offense. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 17.

Borough police were dispatched to 201 W. Centre Ave. Jan. 20. They were told he was intoxicated there with an injury and had been combative with staff.

Patrolman Derek Weicikosky said Elison smelled of alcohol and was stumbling. He walked toward Weicikosky as if to possibly cause physical injury, according to an affidavit of probable cause. He then took Elison down to restrain him but he resisted. He attempted to grab Weicikosky’s duty belt where his weapon and handcuffs are before he was placed in handcuffs. Police then learned he was wanted on a county bench warrant.

Shenandoah Police later arrived to assist whereby Elison yelled profanities even when put in a patrol car. He was taken to the Mahanoy City police station and then to a medical center for stitches after being evaluated by Shenandoah EMS. He had punched a window earlier in the day.

He was then taken to the prison.
