Parryville home damaged by fire

A home was heavily damaged by fire Saturday morning in Parryville.

Borough fire Chief Mike Kunkle said the fire broke out at 8:30 a.m. at 131 Main St.

“The kitchen was fully involved when we got there,” Kunkle said. “We witnessed smoke from all four sides of the building; on the rear left corner is where the majority of the smoke was coming out.”

Kunkle described the conditions.

“There was a window broken out, and we did have active fire in the left rear corner of the building, which was a kitchen,” he said. “The entire building had smoke conditions.”

Kunkle said the home used to be a four-unit apartment building and was now only two units, with the upper unit used for storage, and added only the bottom two units are occupied.

He said there were two occupants at home at the time of the fire.

“There were several neighbors that saw the smoke and went over, and from what I understand, knocked on the door and informed the occupants about the fire and got them out before we got there,” Kunkle said. “The neighbors were assisting the occupants, got them blankets, before we arrived.”

Kunkle said there were no injuries that he was aware of, and added the ambulance did examine the two occupants, but they refused treatment.

He said the fire was contained pretty much to the kitchen of the one apartment unit, though the home is not livable because there was smoke damage throughout the entire structure, as well as water damage.

Kunkle explained what was believed to be the cause of the fire.

“The occupant told us he was making something in his toaster oven, went into the room to watch television, (and) that’s when the neighbor noticed smoke,” he said. “We’re pretty sure that was the cause; something burned in the toaster oven.”

Kunkle said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to knock down the fire, and added they were on scene for about three hours.

“It was cold down there,” he said. “Everything went real smooth.”

Kunkle said those who assisted were the Bowmanstown Fire Department, Franklin Township Fire Department, tankers from the Aquashicola Fire Department and East Penn Fire Department, as well as Diamond Fire Company in Walnutport’s RIT team.

“We appreciated the help from our neighboring fire companies, and with all us working together, it was a quick hit, quick knock down, was contained to a small area,” he said.

“It could have been a lot worse.”
