Zion Opera Workshop to present ‘The Addams Family’

The Zion Opera Workshop will present “The Addams Family Musical.”

Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. March 3-5, as well as 2 p.m. March 5, at the Zion UCC in Lehighton.

Tickets are $10 and are available from any cast member, or at Carbon County music and more weekdays from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Tickets can also be reserved by calling 610-392-1810.

The storyline revolves around the Addams daughter Wednesday, who falls in love with a “normal boy” named Lucas. Wednesday is played by ZOW veteran Laura Reichard, who starred as Mary Poppins in ZOW’s 50th anniversary production. Lucas is played by Reichard’s real-life husband, Adam Reichard, who has also had many leading and supporting roles including Jimmy Smith in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

Wednesday’s father, Gomez, is told of Wednesday’s plan to marry Lucas, but is asked not to mention it to her mother, Morticia. This puts Gomez in quite a sticky situation. Gomez and Morticia are portrayed by the husband and wife team of Brandon and Eliza Cressley, who are also both veterans of the ZOW stage.

Rounding out the zany cast of characters are Pugsley Addams, played by Hunter Andreas, who has appeared with both ZOW and ZOW Junior in past shows. Grandma Addams is played by newcomer Betsy Maholick, whose hilarious audition won her a featured role her very first time. Uncle Fester is played by Andrew Hrusovsky, who is making his debut with ZOW, but recently appeared as Oaken in ZOW Junior’s production of “Frozen Jr.”

No “Addams Family” household would be complete without their very own Lurch, and ZOW’s production is no different. Lurch will be played by Logan Kester, who has appeared in three past ZOW roles.

Lucas’ parents are invited to dinner at the Addams’, and it’s apparent how different the two families are. Lucas’ prim and proper “rhyming” mother, Alice, is played by longtime ZOW veteran Casi Reichard, who has appeared in many roles and also assists with many other aspects of the production. Her husband, Mal, is played by Lehighton Area High School student Nick Hrusovsky, a veteran of ZOW’s stage.

Rounding out the cast is a group of Addams family ancestors who include both of the show’s assistant stage directors Amy Shelly, as Ancestor Marilyn Monroe, and Tara Crowe, as the ghostly bride. Both ladies have appeared in many ZOW roles in the past, and are making their directing debut this year.

Other veteran actors featured as dancing and singing ancestors are Martha Cox, as Greek Goddess Artemis, Lizzy Rief as the Chef ancestor, Kate Newsted as the flapper from the spirit world, Thomas McGinley as the Addams’ oldest ancestor, the cave man, Olivia Erickson as Queen Victoria, and Emily Shelly as the ghostly sailor.

Newcomers to the ZOW stage include Brenna Hunt as the Native American ancestor, Kathleen Lindenmoyer as the spirit world’s ballerina, and Jackie Troutman as the ghost nurse.

Deb Strausberger, owner of TNT Dance Studio of Lehighton, is in charge of choreography for group numbers and solo dances. Many of ZOW’s members have had prior dance training, and receive expert dance training during rehearsals.

Husband and wife team Duane and Pati Reicard serve as co-technical directors for the show. The team designs, builds and collects items to be used in the production including all set pieces and props.

Nancy Keiser is the group’s costume designer, and is joined by daughter Pati Reichard and granddaughter Casi Reichard, who also assist with the costume needs of the group. The group will be accompanied by a live orchestra, which is made up of musicians from Lehighton and surrounding areas.

Zion Opera Workshop is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, director of music at Zion UCC.
