Tamaqua volunteers help restore Christmas decorations

Not everything gets better in time like fine wine.

And the Tamaqua borough’s two-decade old wooden Christmas decorations were not an exception.

But thanks to a group of hardworking volunteers, the decorations were cleaned up and restored for the 2021-22 holiday season.

“I felt the need to organize a group of volunteers of all ages that could refurbish these decorations that have become a tradition for Tamaqua,” said Tamaqua Director of Community Development Ann Marie Calabrese.

“I didn’t want another year to go by without at least a chunk of them on display.”

Santa’s cutout looked sharp, much like he was ready for another trip around the globe to deliver presents.

Volunteers began the restoration project in the summer. They spent many hours improving the holiday cutouts to bring back their bright vintage appearances.

“The project is not completed, but I was thrilled to have so many talented people come forward to get the majority of them finished,” said Calabrese.

“The remainder of the decorations are currently being redone, so that next year, they will all be back on display for everyone to enjoy for years to come.”

Many volunteers helped with the project.

Volunteer Wendy Dunkelberger spearheaded the restoration of the manger scene. She said she wanted a challenge - and it was.

Dunkelberger said it was a full sheet of plywood, but she loved every minute of the work.

“I’m a simple person and I like to help people, if I can, within my reach,” said Dunkelberger.

“When I saw Ann Marie’s post, I thought, why not? I do love to paint and I love Tamaqua.”

Dunkelberger said the manger scene took about two months to complete. She also has some more decorations to finish before next season.

“It felt good to contribute. I used to volunteer all of the time. It’s been a while, but it felt great. We have a good community, we really do.”
