Slatington purchases land to increase size of Victory Park

Victory Park in Slatington is growing. The borough purchased two parcels of land next to the park in mid-December.

Borough Manager Dan Stevens said the owner of the land has had the land for 20 years and asked the borough if it would be interested in purchasing it. The land lies behind residential properties on Main Street, but there isn’t any road access to it.

The two parcels are 205 feet by 112 feet and 120 feet by 64 feet. Combined, the land makes up 0.7 acres. The two parcels cost a total of $10,000.

“We haven’t decided what to use it for yet,” Stevens said.

One possibility is to increase the disc golf course, he suggested.

“We might leave it for open space, since everything is built up in Slatington,” Stevens said. “We don’t get too many opportunities to expand existing parks. This made sense to us.”

Stevens said he anticipates talking with the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority about their ideas for the land. Whatever the borough decides to do with it, he thinks the additional land gives them more options for uses of the park. The purchase ties in with the borough’s ongoing renovation of Victory Park, Stevens said.

That renovation included fixing the pavilion, then the amphitheater. After that, borough crews cleared out some trees last summer.

The tree cutting helped to make the park more visible, Stevens said. And the renovation of the amphitheater made it possible to hold concerts again.

“The four concerts were real successful,” he said. “Hopefully, the public will continue to use it.”

This year, the borough plans to renovate the bathrooms. It has received a grant to help pay for the expense.
