Slatington police chief resigns

Slatington borough council accepted the resignation of the police chief on Monday night during its regular meeting.

Borough manager Dan Stevens said the resignation of Chief David Rachman was accepted with regret. Since it is a personnel issue, he wouldn’t comment on the reason why Rachman resigned.

Rachman’s letter of resignation stated that he wanted to explore new opportunities and to concentrate on his well-being.

Stevens said Rachman had joined the Slatington Police Department in 2006 as its new police chief. Before that, he worked in law enforcement in Allentown.

Contacted this morning, Rachman said his family played a role in his decision.

“I had a plan that once my kids were done with college, I’d put a few more years into Slatington,” Rachman said. “Before I retired, I planned on leaving at some point this year, probably by spring, but no later than the end of the year.

“As things progressed, I just had a discussion with family and friends and decided it was probably best to go now. There’s no time better than the present.”

Rachman said he’s enjoyed his time working with the police department.

“It’s been a privilege to work for Slatington. I will definitely miss many of the people I met throughout the years,” he said. “I’d like them to hopefully continue moving forward, find an appropriate replacement, and go on from there.”

Rachman’s last day on the job is Jan. 22.

The council is planning to meet at 6 p.m. Monday for a special meeting to appoint an acting police chief while they search for a new one.
