Deep freeze headed our way
It’s cold, and it’s about to get even more bitter with a deep freeze on its way.
The refreezing overnight led to icy roads and sidewalks and resulted in area school districts operating on delays and a few closures.
Crashes were reported throughout the area.
Frigid temperatures are on the way tonight and Tuesday, according to Paul Walker, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather
“Probably some of the coldest air in the winter season so far,” said Walker, who added today’s high was expected to reach 25. “Bitterly cold tonight, look for a low of 11, (with) some spots down into single digits tonight.”
Despite plenty of sunshine on Tuesday, Walker said temperatures aren’t likely to go above 18.
“People that have to be outdoors (should be) bundled up in layers, and cover exposed skin to make sure it doesn’t get frost bitten,” he said. “Tomorrow night is probably the coldest night, looking at a low of 8.”
Walker said the frigid temperatures are the result of very cold high pressure that is building from the Midwest into the Ohio Valley.
On Wednesday, he said temperatures could approach near freezing degrees, but will fall just short of that, and by Thursday, we could reach the 40-degree mark.
Walker said there’s a chance for some storms late this week, as there could be a storm moving up along the east coast.
“It’s a complicated weather pattern,” he said. “There is some possibility of some snow later in the weekend, or possibly early next week.”
Walker emphasized that it’s important not to forget about the pooches.
“Remember your pets outdoors,” he said. “Make sure to get them indoors.”
