A little snow tonight, ice on Sunday

Snow is expected to arrive in our area later this evening, though not enough to satisfy true snow lovers.

The snow, in large part, is anticipated to arrive likely after 9 p.m., and figures to be part of a quick-moving storm, according to Tyler Roys, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.

Roys said the snow should be out of the area by Friday’s midmorning commute around 7 or 8 a.m., and out of much of the eastern part of the state before it moves through the New York City region Friday morning.

“In all reality, we’re looking at an 8- or 9-hour duration of a storm,” Roys said. “The heaviest snow is likely to be to the south.”

Roys said that while the Philadelphia area has a better chance to see 3 to 6 inches of snow, our area will see more like 1 to 3 inches, with Allentown getting between 2 to 4.

“In reality, the heaviest of this will be to your south and east (compared to a similar storm track),” he said.

In other word, snow lovers will not be happy.

Roys said Friday looks to be a mostly cloudy day, with temperatures expected to be around freezing, and added the clearing will lead to a largely clear night, with temps dropping into the upper teens and making for a cold night.

“Any melting that does happen in the cleanup process, as we head into tomorrow (Friday) night, there could be some icy spots that develop, especially since temperatures are going to be dropping into the upper teens,” he said. “There could be some icy spots Friday night, Saturday morning, if people aren’t careful.”

Ice Sunday morning

After a bit of a reprieve, icy conditions are expected Sunday morning, Roys said.

He said Saturday appears to be a dry, sunny day, with temperatures around freezing, and said the next storm should start to arrive with increased clouds late Saturday night, when temperatures will again drop to the upper teens.

“The precipitation from this storm looks to arrive probably somewhere around early Sunday morning,” Roys said. “Given the atmospheric conditions, we’re looking at a cold ground versus being a little above freezing in the air; it’s going to fall as rain. Once the rain hits the ground, it’s going to freeze, and we’re going to see some ice Sunday morning across much of the eastern half of Pennsylvania.”

He said temperatures should creep up above freezing, followed by some plain rain sometime in the afternoon hours.
