Eight area players on PA Coaches All-State Football teams

The Times News area was well represented on the recently released PA Football News Coaches All-State Football teams.

Northern Lehigh, which this past fall advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2003, had five players honored.

Brett Misera (kicker), Trevor Amorim (offensive athlete) and Nick Frame (defensive athlete) were named to the First Team in Class 2A, while Austin Smyth (tight end) and AJ Jimenez (defensive end) were Second Team selections.

Their play helped the Bulldogs post double digit wins (11) for the first time since 2011, and they were also able to capture a district championship, which was their first district gold since 2010.

Misera made 56 of 62 extra point attempts while also hauling in seven interceptions, and making 65 total tackles with one fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown this season.

Amorim put together an impressive offensive campaign in 2021. Amorim, who ran for 834 yards and scored 16 rushing touchdowns this season, also left his mark on the wide receiver position in the Northern Lehigh history books. He set records for single-season re receiving yards, career receiving yards, and career receptions for the Bulldogs, finishing with 50 catches for 955 yards and eight scores this season.

Amorim was always a big play threat, averaging 19.1 yards per catch and 7.87 yards per carry. He was a First Team Colonial League All Star as an athlete.

Nick Frame and Jimenez tied for the team lead with 86 total tackles. Frame also had five interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Jimenez made a team-leading five sacks with one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

Smyth had four catches for 100 yards and two scores for an offense that piled up an area best 390.4 yards per game and averaged 39.1 points per game.

Palmerton, which won nine games and advanced to the District 11 Class 2A championship game against Northern Lehigh, had two players selected.

Lucas Heydt (outside linebacker) was a First Team pick, while Matt Machalik (offensive athlete) was selected to the Second Team.

Heydt’s 85 total tackles were third on the team for the Blue Bombers. He recorded seven tackles for a loss, two sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Machalik was third in the area in passing, completing 92 of 170 attempts for 1,301 yards and nine scores, while also rushing for 1,542 yards on 149 carries (10.35 yards per carry), good for second in the area, and 29 touchdowns. He set Bomber single season records for interceptions, points scored (201) and touchdowns. He was a Second Team Colonial League All-Star at quarterback, helping the Blue Bombers lead the area in scoring at 40.4 points per game this year, while averaging 372.5 yards per game.

Jim Thorpe’s Noah Rosahac was a Second Team selection in Class 3A at defensive end. The sophomore led the Olympians with 86 total tackles, including 68 solo, with 27 tackles for a loss.

He also had 1.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
