Tamaqua Giving Tree helps those in need of warmth

Those in need of winter attire can take from The Giving Tree in Depot Square Park in Tamaqua.

This is the sixth year for the tree, which was decorated Sunday with gloves, hats, scarves and socks for all ages.

“A lot of people are too embarrassed to go into a building and ask for a help. A tree does not ask questions,” said Tammy Sienkiewicz, of Tamaqua, whose daughter Alexandria “Alex” Sienkiewicz, 23, died of a fentanyl overdose April 2, 2016.

Items will be on the tree until Jan. 31. Donations from the community and Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet, an organization John and Tammy founded after Alex’s death, fundraisers and donations to the organization make the community kindness possible.

Initially, 45 items were put on the tree. By Wednesday, it was empty. That shows Sienkiewicz the need in the area. As needed, the tree will be decorated again, usually twice a week. More than 1,600 were on the tree in 2020.

Donations of the much-needed items including child and adult gloves are accepted at Hope and Coffee, 137 Pine St., and New Roots Recovery Center, 232 Pine St., Tamaqua. Monetary contributions are accepted by contacting Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet or Tammy Sienkiewicz on Facebook.
