A bridge in Tremont Borough will be replaced.
Schuylkill County Commissioners approved using $200,000 from the liquid fuels account for bridge 24 on Line Street.
County Engineer Lisa Mahall said the bridge will be completely replaced. The 1937 two-lane concrete T-beam bridge is structurally deficient, she said.
Estimated costs to fix the bridge is $1.5 million. The $200,000 will be used for engineering costs. The county received a 2019 multimodal grant for $350,000 that will be used. The remainder of the funds will come from liquid fuels. The bridge has a weight restriction of 14 tons or combination of 21. Previously, it was 35 tons and 40 combined, she said. It has an average daily traffic of 550 vehicles.
Mahal said the bridge is going to be a single-span spread box-beam bridge and not have a pier into the water, which will help to reduce the potential for flooding and debris accumulation.
While an exact timeline has yet to be established, it is hoped that engineering could start in January 2022, bidding out by the spring of 2023.
Detours are possible.
“It’s going to be a relatively simple bridge,” Mahall said.
County bridge 22, also on Line Street but in an alley, is also structurally deficient and has a low daily volume of traffic. It will be done at a later date.
