Slatington mayor honored for years of service

The Slatington Borough Council honored Mayor Walter Niedermeyer with a plaque Monday night for his dedicated service for 20 years. Niedermeyer began serving as mayor in 2001 with several consecutive terms.

Council President Bryon Reed presented the plaque to Niedermeyer during the council’s regular meeting.

“He wasn’t born in Slatington, but all the years he’s been here you would never know it. He just blended into the community and got involved in everything and went to all the functions,” he said.

Reed talked about the mayor’s involvement in community organizations and his volunteer work helping crews with the trail head and the covered bridge.

“Walter picked up every slate and laid it there for the guys,” he said. “Walter touched every piece of it.”

“Just about, just about,” Niedermeyer said. He said he helped whenever and wherever help was needed.

“Thanks Walter,” Reed said.

With a smile, Niedermeyer accepted the plaque.

Later in the meeting before it drew to a close, Niedermeyer said, “I’d like to thank the citizens of this fine community for supporting me for 20 years. I’m still going to be volunteering. I’ll be around somewhere.”

Niedermeyer plans to continue being active in the Lions Club, the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority and other organizations.

Jeralyn Walters Schoch will be stepping up as the borough’s next mayor.

Reed also thanked council members Jason Ruff and Dave Schnaars for their service to the borough and all of the hours they put in on the council. Schnaars has served on the council for 10 years and Ruff for 5½ years. The meeting was their last as council members.

“I just want to say it’s been a privilege to serve this community for these 10 years,” Schnaars said. “Thank you for the opportunity.”

Ruff said he felt the same way.
