Walnutport council votes to hold the line on taxes in 2022

For the third straight year, Walnutport residents will not see a municipal tax rate increase.

On a 5-0 measure, borough council on Thursday granted final adoption of the 2022 budget with no millage rate increase.

That will leave the millage rate unchanged at 19.25 mills. Councilman Harold Greene and Councilwoman Iris Blum were absent.

Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz said she was pleased with how next year’s spending plan turned out.

“We did a little bit of (tweaking),” Wentz said. “But overall, I’m kind of happy where we’re at.”

Last month, council agreed to advertise the 2022 preliminary budget with a half-mill increase.

However, council indicated that was a worst-case scenario, as it didn’t expect an actual raise in taxes.

In December 2020, council adopted this year’s budget with no tax rate increase.

However, in order to balance this year’s budget, council opted not to continue to fund the Northern Lehigh Recreation Authority.

That came after council in November 2020 advertised this year’s preliminary budget with a half-mill increase, along with an estimated $30,000 to $40,000 rollover, to balance the budget.
