Ice causes multi-car crash in Summit Hill

An area of the Route 902 hill about a quarter mile from the Pine Street intersection is a perennial icy mess in the colder months.

This morning, the site was the scene of a five-vehicle crash that severely damaged all the vehicles involved.

One person was injured and transported from the scene by ambulance for a reported head injury.

Some of the first rescue workers who arrived at the scene said the road was so slippery they were forced to jump out the way of vehicles which lost control.

The crash involved a car, two pickups and two vans. It happened at about 6:30 a.m. and resulted in the road between White Bear and Summit Hill proper being closed for over an hour. This impacted not only commuters but some school bus traffic.

The scene has been the site of many crashes over the years.

A fire police directing traffic at Pine Street and Amidon Street said, “I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been here for accidents at that icy patch.”

The ice is caused by a poor drainage situation that causes water to flow across the highway in a sharp curve. A similar situation exists at the bottom of the same hill, in White Bear, but no incidents occurred this morning.

A PennDOT truck arrived to salt the road while emergency responders were at the scene.

The Summit Hill Fire Department, Lansford Fire Department, Summit Hill Police Department, Lansford Police Department, Lehighton Ambulance and area fire police responded to the scene.
