Borough to explore financing options for new pumper

Palmerton Fire Department remains on schedule to receive its new pumper in the spring.

On a 5-0 vote, borough council on Thursday agreed to explore financing for the department’s new firetruck.

Councilwoman Holly Hausman-Sell abstained from the vote. Council President Terry Costenbader was absent.

Councilman Kris Hoffner noted that the truck purchased from KME in Nesquehoning is anticipated to arrive next year.

Borough Manager Donna McGarry confirmed the department is still in line to have its new truck in the spring.

“They’re anticipating it in May,” McGarry said.

McGarry noted the borough doesn’t qualify for a USDA loan because it needed to apply for the funding before committing to the purchase.

Since council authorized the firetruck purchase in April, she said the borough can’t apply for USDA funds.

After the meeting, she said the borough will seek funding through its financial advisers, Public Financial Management.

In April, council on a 5-0 vote, with an abstention from Hausman-Sell, agreed to order a pumper through KME of Nesquehoning in the amount of $672,500.

As part of its approval, council authorized McGarry to seek financing for the project.
