W. Penn recycling site to close at dusk next month

The West Penn Township recycling program has received positive feedback since its July inception.

However, some adjustments are necessary.

The bin has been filling up quickly, and the lack of drivers has been an issue regarding how often it’s emptied. The board recently had conversations about purchasing a second recycling bin, which is yet to be determined if it’s the best action to take.

“Things have been leveling off a little bit and we’re getting to a point where we’re not filling up as fast,” said Supervisor Tim Houser.

“The dumpster is being taken care of on a more regular basis now. Apparently, from people just waiting for recycling to start again, there was an overflow, and it seems to be adjusting itself now.”

Board President Tony Prudenti added the decrease in activity after the initial surge is noticeable via permit sales.

New recycling hours

Due to daylight saving time, the board determined to change the recycling hours of operation to end at dusk on Thursdays and Fridays. The change will go into effect Nov. 4 and 5.

The recycling site, which is for township residents only, will still be open every Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to noon and each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Other business

The board of supervisors approved the following motions

• Hiring of Kai Appel, part-time police officer, at a rate of $21 per hour.

• Purchase of a cross conveyor from EM Kutz at $9,998.

The change in hours of West Penn's recycling site will begin Nov. 4. The bin is located adjacent to the West Penn Fire Company and is for township residents only. JUSTIN CARLUCCI/TIMES NEWS
