East Penn father enters plea in death of son

A Lehighton man entered a guilty plea to a charge of involuntary manslaughter on Monday in the death of his 2-year-old son.

Andrew John Zawosiki, 29, of Laurel Spring Road, East Penn Township, appeared before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to enter his plea for an incident that occurred on May 24, 2020, at his home.

His son shot himself in the head with a 9 mm Glock handgun.

At the time of the incident state police at Lehighton, who investigated, said the child as taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Lehighton, where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers said the gun was loaded and a shell was in the chamber at the time of the incident.

Zawosiki told the court he was in the shower when he heard a “pop” sound. He went to investigate and found his wife with the child injured. He said they called for medical assistance.

Zawosiki told troopers he and his wife had the gun for protection. He said the night before the incident he was watching television and had the gun lying on his chest. He said he put his son to bed later in the evening. The next morning the son found the gun and it went off. He denied the gun was found in a toy basket, as was first reported.

Nanovic noted there were two other guns found in the home by investigators.

Nanovic deferred sentencing and ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.
