A Day Along the Walnutport Canal set for Sunday

It’s a chance for people to become reacquainted not only with nature, but also friends, both old and new.

That essentially describes the concept behind A Day Along the Walnutport Canal, which will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sponsored by the Walnutport Canal Association, the event will be held rain or shine, said Jeanne Boehrer, festival event member.

There will be entertainment by Dave and Brenda Rehrig from 12:30-4:30 p.m. on the Main Stage on South Canal Street.

Other activities include hay rides; a basket auction in the pavilion; the Heritage Center Museum will be open; a Kids Creativity Corral featuring magician Joe Keppel, with shows at 12:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., plus strolling.

Additionally, there will also be plenty of food, crafters and demonstrators.

Boehrer said the decision to hold the event wasn’t made without plenty of thought.

“Normally, we would start to organize it in February, but with COVID going on, we were delaying it,” Boehrer said. “In July, we decided let’s do it.”

Boehrer noted that last year would have marked the event’s 40th anniversary.

“That didn’t happen, so we decided that for the first post-COVID event, let’s give it a different name, a little different flair,” she said. “It’s a nice little community event, see your neighbors you haven’t seen in 18 months, meet up with old friends, new friends.”

Boehrer added the event should help ail the cabin fever that many have experienced in recent times.

“It’s just going to be a nice little community event, and to see people come out and be in the neighborhood,” she said. “It’s actually to have people have something to look forward to, and have them enjoy themselves for the day.”
