Tamaqua to induct 25th Hall of Fame class

The Tamaqua Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will induct its 25th class into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Katie MacDonald (Class of 1998), Todd Breiner (Class of 2002), Raymond DeWire (Class of 2005), Tyler Hope (Class of 2014), Brett Kosciolek (Class of 2015) Bo Rottet (Class of 2015) and Morgan Boyle (Class of 2016) will be honored before Monday’s football game against Northern Lehigh.

The ceremony is set to begin at around 6:40 p.m.

Katie MacDonald

Class of 1998

• Katie was a three-time three sport athlete in cross country, swimming and track and field.

• In cross country she was a member of three Schuylkill League championships, along with being a three-time qualifier for the District 11 Championships.

• She has numerous accolades in swimming, as she was a member of several 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams that set school, pool and league records at her time of graduation. The 1998 freestyle relay team was a District XI champion and PIAA state qualifier. She was also a member of the three-time Schuylkill League team champions.

• In track and field, in the 400 meter dash, she was the District 11 champion and PIAA state qualifier in 1997. She was also a PIAA state qualifier as a member of the 3200 meter relay team.

• Katie went on to run track at Lock Haven University, where she was a part of the 2002 women’s indoor and outdoor championship teams in the PSAC conference. She was also a member of the 400-meter relay team, which had a national qualifying time and a school record that still stands today.

• She graduated from Lock Haven with a degree in Recreational Fitness Management, and then went on to obtain her certification and licensure in massage therapy.

• She is the daughter of Dan and Laurie MacDonald. She resides in Lock Haven with her husband, Chad Warren, and they have three children Bryce, Zaylie and Ryder.

Todd Breiner

Class of 2002

• Todd was a three-sport athlete and earned nine varsity letters in football, basketball, and track and field. On the football field, Breiner played running back, outside linebacker, and special teams. In his career, he carried the ball 130 times for 634 yards, had 28 receptions for 434 yards and 12 total touchdowns. He was also First and Second Team Schuylkill County All-Star.

• On the basketball court, he was a two-year varsity starter and scored 134 career points.

• On the track, Todd was a standout hurdler. As a sophomore, he finished third in the 110-meter-high hurdles at the Schuylkill League championships, before adding a second-place finish as a junior. He was a three-time District 11 silver medalist in the 110-meter-high hurdles in 2000, 2001, and 2002, qualifying for the state championships in 2001 and 2002. His best finish at the state meet was 11th with a time of 15.26. In 2002, he also earned a gold medal at the District 11 championships as part of the 1600 relay team. He qualified and then competed at the state meet in Shippensburg in the event that year.

• He went on to run track and field at East Stroudsburg University, where he ran the 55-meter indoor hurdles, 110-meter-high hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, the 1600-meter relay, high jump and the long jump. He then transitioned into training and competing in the pentathlon indoors and decathlon. He was a three-year PSAC indoor and outdoor track and field qualifier in multiple events.

• Todd earned a dual bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University in 2006, graduating with summa cum laude. He completed his Master’s in Education: Secondary Curriculum and Instruction at Kutztown University in 2010, and his K-12 Principal Certification from Penn State University in 2013.

• Upon graduation, he was hired by the East Penn School District where he taught Health, Physical Education, and Driver Education for six years. He was then hired as an assistant principal at Emmaus High School. After spending five years as a high school assistant principal, he was hired by the Pleasant Valley School District as the Principal of their Intermediate School in 2018. In July of 2021, he was hired and is currently employed as the principal of Slatington Elementary School in the Northern Lehigh School District.

• Todd is the son of Ruth (deceased) and Mahlon Breiner, and formerly a resident of Hometown. He currently resides in Slatington with his wife, Lesa, daughter, Greta (four years old), son, Micah (two years old), and his father, Mahlon. He is also the brother of newly-appointed Tamaqua High School Assistant Principal Lisa Shirvinki.

Raymond DeWire

Class of 2005

• Ray played football his freshman and sophomore year, and was a member of the swimming team for all four years.

• In the pool, Ray was a four-year letter winner and held records in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle. He was the first 1,000-point scorer in swimming in school history, and still holds the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:50.99). He was an all-state honorable mention in the 200 freestyle, and competed in the PIAA state championship his senior year. Ray medaled in numerous events at both leagues and districts his sophomore, junior, and senior year.

• Upon graduation, Ray swam for Division 1 Niagara University. There, he majored in Sport and Recreation Management, and was a four-year athlete of the men’s swimming program. He primarily swam the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle, and 1,650 freestyle. While at Niagara, he was a three-year Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference all academic athlete and served as both the vice president and president of the student athlete advisory committee for all athletes on campus. Ray qualified for the East Coast Athletic Conference meet his junior and senior year. Ray graduated summa cum laude in 2009.

• Raymond received his master’s degree in Sport Management and Coaching Leadership from St. John’s University in 2013. Since then, he has served as Aquatics Director at various YMCA’s in New Jersey and New York, as well as at the Fairfax County Park Authority in Virginia. Ray also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for the New York Athletic Club. At the New York Athletic Club, Ray managed their Olympic athlete program, which supports over 400 elite athletes, including Olympic medalists and champions. Currently, he serves as the Aquatics Director at the Capital District YMCA in the Albany, New York area.

• Ray is an avid outdoorsman, having climbed Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States, and has currently climbed 24 of the Adirondack 46. Ray is a licensed wilderness guide, and guides backcountry adventures in the Catskill and Adirondack mountains in his free time. Ray is also a published freelance writer, writing for numerous print and digital publications.

• Raymond is married to Brittany Bisnott, and has two children, Blythe and Phil. They currently reside in Cropseyville, New York.

Tyler Hope

Class of 2014

• Tyler is a four-year letter winner in both football and track and field.

• On the football field, he was a standout running back. He is seventh on the all-time list with 1,177 yards in a single season. He also has the third-longest touchdown run of 91 yards, and second for most yards in a game with 350. He also ranks eighth on the all-time chart with 32 career TDs. He was recognized as the Times News Player of the Week once, and the T102 Player of the Week twice. He was the senior all-star game MVP.

• Tyler was well accomplished in track and field. He has Schuylkill League championships in the javelin (one), District 11 champions (three) and two PIAA state medals (second and sixth). He was also part of a championship 400 meter relay team. Tyler still holds the school record in the javelin with a throw of 198-4.

• Tyler attended Penn State Main University for one year, competing in track and field before transferring to East Stroudsburg University and completing his degree in Business Management.

• He is the son of fellow Hall of Famer Denise Hope and her husband, Bob, and brother of fellow Hall of Famer Kayla Hope.

Brett Kosciolek

Class of 2015

• Brett was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and baseball.

• In basketball, Brett scored 1,502 points, which currently has him as the school’s third all-time leading scorer. Brett lead the team in scoring his freshman and sophomore seasons with averages of 14.7 and 16.3 points per game, respectively. Those same years, Brett also led the team in three-point fields goals recording 38 and 44, respectively. He was named the Times News Player of the Year in basketball three times.

• He was part of the 2014-15 basketball team that was a Schuylkill League finalist, District 11 semifinalist, and consolation game participant. That team qualified for the first round of the PIAA state championships before losing to Steelton-Highspire, 64-51.

• In baseball, Brett was noted on the mound where he ended with a 14-4 career record along with three saves and an ERA of 1.56. His junior and senior years, he accumulated ERAs of 0.93 and 0.94. When he was not pitching, he played first base. At the plate, he had a career .346 batting average with 104 hits (including 13 HRs), 64 RBIs and 61 runs scored. His sophomore year he led the team with a .417 batting average.

• He was a member of the 2014 baseball team that was a District 11 champions and PIAA state semifinalist before losing to Pope John Paul, 1-0. Brett was also on the 2013 baseball team that was a Schuylkill League and District 11 champion and advanced to the PIAA state quarterfinals before losing to Abington Heights, 6-4.

• Brett is employed at the Water Gap Wellness Golf Course in East Stroudsburg.

• Brett is the son of Caszy and Betteanne Kosciolek.

Bo Rottet

Class of 2015

• Bo was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and baseball.

• In basketball, Bo recorded 1,117 points as the Raiders point guard, which made him the eighth all-time leading scorer for Tamaqua at the time. Bo led the team in scoring in his junior and senior campaigns, averaging 15.0 and 16.8 points per game, respectively. He also led the team in three-point field goals with 51 his junior year, and 44 his senior year. Bo finished his career with 144 made three-point field goals.

• He was part of the 2014-15 basketball team that was a Schuylkill League finalist, District 11 semifinalist and consolation game participant. That team qualified for the first round of the PIAA state championships before losing to Steelton-Highspire, 64-51.

• In baseball, Bo started at shortstop all four years and batted leadoff for the team. He recorded a total of 103 hits in his career, highlighted by his junior season where he batted .446, which was second on the team and recorded 45 hits in 27 games. His career batting average was .325.

• Bo also pitched for the Raiders. In his junior season, he recorded six wins boasting a 2.15 ERA. In 39 innings of work, Bo struck out 48 batters. He was named the Times News and Pottsville Republican Player of the Year in 2014.

• He was a member of the 2014 baseball team that was a District 11 champion and PIAA state semifinalist before losing to Pope John Paul, 1-0. Bo was also on the 2013 baseball team that was a Schuylkill League and District 11 champion and advanced to the PIAA state quarterfinals before losing to Abington Heights, 6-4.

• He continued his academic and athletic career at Kutztown University where he majored in education. He was a four-year starter at shortstop and batted out of the leadoff spot. He led KU in nearly every offensive category in 2017 as he was the only Golden Bear to appear in all 47 games. He was atop the team with a .342 batting average, 33 runs scored, 55 hits, 11 doubles, four triples, 77 total bases and a .478 slugging percentage. He also led the team with a .422 on-base percentage, as he drew a team-high 18 walks. He stole a team-best nine bases, and was second on the team with 25 RBIs. His four triples were tied for the PSAC lead. He recorded six three-hit games and 18 multi-hit games.

• Bo concluded his career at Kutztown with 160 hits. He was a four-time PSAC Scholar Athlete, maintaining a career 3.95 GPA. He was also named to the to the NCBWA Preseason All-Atlantic Region Team before the start of his Junior year.

• Currently, Bo teaches seventh grade science at Commonwealth Charter Academy. He and his wife, Bailey, currently reside in Andreas.

• Bo is the son of Tom and Kim Rottet, and the brother of 2013 graduate and fellow Hall of Fame inductee Kailee Lakitsky.

Morgan Boyle

Class of 2016

• Morgan was a four-year letter winner in both soccer and track and field.

• In soccer, she earned two Schuylkill League second team honors as a forward. She recorded 28 career goals, including 16 her junior year, to rank 13th on the all-time career goals chart.

• Morgan was a standout in track and field. She was a two-time Schuylkill League champion in both the pole vault and the javelin. At the District 11 championships, she was a two-time champion in the javelin and one in the pole vault. At the PIAA State championships, Morgan finished in sixth, eighth and 13th in the javelin, winning two state medals. She also placed eighth (twice) and ninth place in the pole vault, also winning two state medals.

• She still holds the school record in the pole vault at a height of 10-6.

• Morgan was named the track and field female Athlete of the Year by the Times News.

• Morgan continued her academic and track and field careers at Coastal Carolina University for four years on an athletic scholarship. She has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and is working toward a master’s degree in nutrition.

• She is the daughter of Mike and Heather Boyle and the sister of Tyler, Nate and Sophia Boyle.

• She currently resides in North Carolina with her fiancé Tyler Thompson.
