Greenzweig Sr. honored for more than 53 years of service to fair

Dale Greenzweig Sr. fondly remembers cutting cabbage to make sauerkraut in the fair kitchen as a kid.

“I remember this fair when it was one day and then it rains. So, it became two days. Then five days and now seven days,” he said.

His father, Eugene Greenzweig, served as a fair director for 50-some years. After he died, his son wanted to continue the legacy.

“I came back from the Vietnam War in 1967 and asked to fill my dad’s spot. I’ve been a director ever since.”

He is one of the Eldred Township directors and he has been taking care of the fairgrounds’ electrical matters and a handful of backup generators for years.

A family tradition of fair service has continued, and his son, Dale “Peanut” Greenzweig, is the fair president.

“We have so many fine people who have done so much for the fair,” said Greenzweig Jr. during Wednesday’s luncheon for fair directors, sponsors and special guests.

“Today we honor a man who has been director for 53 years. He makes sure the generators are working, gets signs made and doesn’t go looking for praise,” Greenzweig Jr. said.

He then presented an award of appreciation to his father.

State Sen. Mario Scavello and state Rep. Jack Rader had a second award of appreciation to give to the elder Greenzweig.

This is “in recognition of distinguished service to the people of Monroe County and the commonwealth,” the award states.

Scavello said the West End Fair is well-known around the state and he often receives compliments about this fair.
