Auxiliary plans 9/11 remembrance

On Sept. 11, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 360 in Weatherly will hold a “911 Remembrance” at the post home.

Sept. 11, 2001, was the deadliest day on U.S. soil since the Civil War and the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. In total, 2,977 lives were lost in New York City, at the Pentagon and on Flight 93 near Shanksville, including citizens from 90 foreign nations. Since 9/11, thousands of first responders have perished from 9/11-related illnesses (a toll that is still rising), and over 70 million children have been born in the U.S., meaning that over 20% of our population has no living memory of 9/11.

To honor first responders and veterans, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 360 in Weatherly will hold a free pancake and sausage breakfast on Sept. 11 from 8 until 11 a.m. at the Post home. The breakfast will be available to all first responders and veterans, but reservations are required. The deadline for reservations is Aug. 27. Contact Georgia Farrow at 570-427-4527.

At 1 p.m. there will be brief ceremony with the raising of the freedom flag. After that, the American Legion Auxiliary will hold an open house until 4 p.m.

In cooperation with the Weatherly Area School District, there will be memorabilia and a piece of the steel from Tower 1 above the impact zone for the public to view. Free hot dogs and turkey barbecue, drinks and chips will be available for all attendees.

Weatherly is the only school district in Pennsylvania to receive the medal. Through this partnership, the Freedom Flag Foundation and Weatherly Area School District share a commitment to uphold America’s promise to “Never Forget.”
