Luminaria walk honors those with cancer

COVID-19 has upset a lot of schedules and among them was the luminaria walk normally held in conjunction with the Relay for Life benefit of the American Cancer Society each year.

Because it was canceled, the walk was instead held Saturday in conjunction with the ACS Telethon in the parking lot of Penn’s Peak.

About 50 participants paraded around more than 300 luminarias that were placed there either by cancer survivors, in honor of cancer survivors or for people who passed away from cancer.

Most luminarias had names written on the bags. Some had artwork such as hearts or other designs.

Prior to the walk, Sherri Lynn Romanick of Drums gave opening remarks. Reilly Bauer of Panther Valley High School provided the vocal selections “Amazing Grace” and “Hallelujah.”

This is Romanick’s second time hosting the luminaria walk. The first time it was held with the Relay for Life.

After the luminaria was canceled two years in a row, Romanick said, “I’m very happy we are able to do this event in spite of the danger (of COVID).”

She said she lost a grandmother to cancer and, “I’m raising my daughter to be part of the Cancer Telethon community and teaching her the importance of working together to find a cure; and support those who have cancer. I’m very grateful for all the volunteers and all who donated to make tonight’s event a success.”

Besides the luminarias inside the stationary bags, the individuals walking the path around them carried candles.

The event raised about $3,000 for the cancer telethon.
