Woman killed in early morning Lehigh crash

A Lehigh County woman was killed when the vehicle she was a passenger in crashed early Monday.

State police at Bethlehem said the crash occurred at 12:28 a.m. along Route 22, three-tenths of a mile west of Route 145, in Whitehall Township.

Troopers said a 2009 Hyundai Sonata was driven westbound when it left the road and struck a concrete base of a utility pole, where it came to rest.

A passenger in the vehicle, Jessica M. Rivera, 41, of Allentown, was pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Rachel Tallarico at 12:58 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

The driver, a 42-year-old man from Scranton, was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, for treatment of suspected minor injuries.

Troopers said a Troop M forensic services unit and a collision analysis reconstruction unit assisted at the scene. The vehicle was towed.

The westbound lanes of Route 22 were closed for about four hours during the investigation. The crash remains under investigation, troopers added.
