Schuylkill Fair reports great attendance

Paul Kennedy said attendance at the Schuylkill County Fair has been “big.”

“We had a great Tuesday so far,” he said after estimating the visitors to the fair.

More than 4,500 people attended Tuesday. Monday’s numbers were the best for a Monday, surpassing the 4,024 set in 2016. A final tally was not available.

The fair was not held last year due to the pandemic. Tuesday was kids day and children could participate in games, an obstacle course and even learn about bugs.

Those walking the grounds were thrilled to return to some semblance of normalcy.

“Who doesn’t love the Schuylkill County Fair? It’s tradition in Schuylkill County be to at the fair,” said Tracy Novitsky, 57, of Schuylkill Haven.

She was with her grandchildren Lydia Edmonds, 6 and Bella Edmonds, 10, and their cousin Kaylee Graf. They played games and won numerous prizes including a dolphin, a ball, a unicorn and other stuffed animals. They also ate cheesesteaks and French fries.

“The food is always wonderful,” Novitsky said.

Usually the parents attend but could not do so this time.

Keagan Coleman, 14, of Tuscarora, climbed a rock wall as Jamie Coleman, 51, his father watched on.

“I haven’t been here in a few years,” Jamie Coleman said.

He had the week off this year so he went.

“I’m actually surprised how many people are here,” he said.

Julie Moyer, 35, of Reading was looking for something fun to do and saw a Facebook post about the fair and came - a first for her and those she brought,

Lily Smith, 10, of Robesonia; Peggy Moyer, 68, of Leesport; Connor Smith, 9, and Randy Criss, 33, both of Robesonia.

“We’re having a blast,” Julie Moyer said.

Josh Tasone, 33, ate corn on the cob saturated with butter.

“The kids are happy every time we come here,” Tassone said.

He said the children played games and went on the rides.

“It’s the best,” he said.

The fair continues through Saturday, with daily entertainment, rides and exhibits.

Shows include: Hooligan, tonight with shows at 7 and 9; Mudflaps reunion, shows at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday;

Amish Outlaws, shows at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, and John King with Hannah Violet Trio, shows at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday.

The fairgrounds are located at 2270 Fair Road, Schuylkill Haven. General admission is $5 and parking is free.

Gates open at 4 p.m. today and Friday. The fair opens at 11 a.m. Thursday and Saturday.
