A local nonprofit organization has planned a new fundraiser for families this holiday season.

Lights at the Lake will be a drive through light show that will feature brilliant holiday displays throughout picturesque Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Raising the House will run the holiday event on weekends from Thanksgiving weekend until New Year’s weekend, according to Raising the House board member Tamara House.

“We’re looking to provide another enjoyable, family-friendly holiday experience for everyone in the Carbon County area and beyond,” House said. “We’re very excited about this.”

House said the event is certain to become a festive holiday tradition for the whole family, and explained how the initiative was conceptualized.

“We were approached by a company who does lights displays all over, and they were interested in working with a nonprofit organization in the area,” she said. “They thought we were a perfect fit because of what our mission is about.”

House said while they are still ironing out all the details, she believes the fundraiser is a “win-win” for everyone.

“We are going to be working with the (Carbon) county commissioners; they’re very excited that we are bringing this to Mauch Chunk Lake because Jim Thorpe during the holiday season brings in all types of tourists from all over to enjoy,” she said. “It will hopefully help with the tourism in the area.”

House said the organization believes the event will do well since the closet drive-through light displays are the Lights in the Parkway in Allentown, as well as a light display at the Lehigh Valley Zoo that is a walk through.

“It will start at the lake entrance and go all the way to the end,” she said. “The proceeds will benefit Raising the House and everything that we do in the Palmerton area and Palmerton (Area) School District, so we’re very excited about it.”

House added the event will be strictly run by all volunteers.

”We are also looking to partner with other volunteer groups or nonprofit groups, and we would share some of the dollar amount of our proceeds with them so it can also benefit other groups as well,” she said. “We’re also hoping to help out other organizations as well.

House said any organization that would like to supply volunteers to earn some money for their organization, may contact raisingthehouse.org, raisingthehouse@gmail.com, or message them through Facebook or Instagram. She said all volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

In June, the eight annual Raising the House 5K Run and Walk was held in Palmerton.

The annual race is hosted each spring and dedicated to the memory of Blaine House, a Towamensing teacher who died in 2013.
