Carbon OKs camping plan for Flagstaff

A proposed camping development on Flagstaff Mountain in Jim Thorpe got the green light from Carbon County and is one step closer to becoming a reality.

On Tuesday, the Carbon County Planning Commission recommended plan approval for Jake Arner Farms LLC for a rustic camping site.

The proposed land development is located on the previously approved lot 1, which is phase 1 of the Canyon Rim Estates.

According to the plans, 0.9 acres would be developed to place six temporary rustic tent sites on the lot, as well as two transportable portalet units.

“We are passionate about rustic camping and hiking,” Katrina Gonsorick of OFF Trail Adventures told Jim Thorpe Borough Council in June. “Our mission is to educate people who are new to the outdoors on how to camp and enjoy the outdoors safely. We searched throughout Pennsylvania for places to provide our education services. We fell in love with Jim Thorpe. There is so much to offer and so many beautiful hiking trails.”

According to the OFF Trail Outdoors website, it is looking to allow guests “to experience the great outdoors in a more luxurious environment.”

“We offer guided hiking tours through miles of scenic mountain top trails,” the website states. “Wilderness survival classes, including how to start a fire, from beginner to extreme weather conditions, foraging edible plants & wilderness navigation. Join us for morning yoga on the mountain top or stargaze with us on Canyon Rim under the bright starry sky. Share stories and s’mores by the large social fire pit. Join in on fireside cooking demos by Chef Joe, or relax by the wayside to enjoy the mountain top serenity.”

Gonsorick said five tents would be available to book through the website when the company is up and running. The website lists tent prices at $160 per night.

“We would aim to open in April of each year and close down after October,” Gonsorick said.

Ivan O. Meixell, county planner, presented his findings to the commission before the recommendation.

He said that plan had no non-conforming issues and noted that Arner, as well as Joseph Gonsorick of OFF Trail Outdoors were at the June 15 planning commission meeting and made an informal presentation.

The commission’s approval now goes to Jim Thorpe, for inclusion in their meeting for approval of the project.
