Charges held in Schuylkill shooting

An Ashland man charged with shooting his wife in the neck in Port Carbon May 26 waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Curtis Branch, 38, had a 1 p.m. hearing scheduled in front of Magisterial District Judge David Plachko, Port Carbon. He remains in Schuylkill County Prison without bail for the attempted first-and third degree murder of Cynthia Salvador-Branch. He is also charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment, possessing instruments of crime, and possession of a firearm prohibited. All charges were waived. The case now proceeds to Schuylkill County Common Pleas Court.

Police say Branch shot Salvador-Branch while she sat in her vehicle. She had been fighting with him before being shot and driving to the borough police station at 301 First St. Schuylkill EMS transported her where she was taken to Geisinger Hospital-Danville with life-threatening injuries.

Police found Branch walking on Coal Street in the borough. He was known to police because of his previous interactions with them. A Taurus 9mm handgun registered to the victim was found after a search of the home. A spent shell casing from a 9mm gun was found where the vehicle was, police said. Branch is prohibited from possessing a firearm, having been convicted of a felony sale of a controlled substance in New York.
