Solar firm withdraws application Mahoning Drive-In will continue to operate

Another step forward toward the longevity of the Mahoning Drive-In Theater was made on Wednesday.

Strubinger Law P.C. noted it has written confirmation that Greenskies Clean Energy LLC, is withdrawing its zoning application to further develop the land which the theater occupies.

“I know, publicly, they said they weren’t planning on continuing to develop the plan,” said Mark Nelson, drive-in general manager.

“I hadn’t seen it in writing, but I took their word as a fact. It’s good to see it in writing.”

It went public last Wednesday that Greenskies Clean Energy LLC, a renewable energy company headquartered in Connecticut, had the property which the drive-in sits upon optioned to it by Mahoning’s landowner.

Mahoning Drive-In supporters flocked to social media with a barrage posts, shares and emails directed toward Greenskies.

The solar company made a series of statements on social media last week and said it would re-evaluate the situation. Greenskies stuck to its word and determined to not move forward with the project.

A post on the Greenskies Twitter account said, “The outpouring of support from the local community and cinephiles near and far has demonstrated the unique value the Mahoning Drive-In represents. @GreenskiesSolar is proud to have played a part in helping preserve a celebrated business like the @MahoningDIT.

“It’s really step one of two for us,” Nelson added.

Step two, Nelson said, would be to purchase the property from the landowner.

“The beginning of that process has begun,” Nelson said.

Nelson said the drive-in hosted visitors from states such as Texas, California, Illinois who attended Joe Bob’s Drive-In Jamboree, its multiday event last weekend.

Actor John Irving Bloom, also known as “Joe Bob Briggs,” is famous for hosting the TNT series MonsterVision from 1996-2000. Bloom was on site to meet fans from all over the country who traveled to Lehighton.

“I think we sold a total 3,000 or 4,000 tickets over the weekend.”
