Police: Man cloned credit cards to buy $1,000 in gas

A Florida man has been charged with using cloned credit cards to fraudulently purchase nearly $1,100 in gasoline from a Chestnuthill Township gas station.

Pennsylvania State Police Fern Ridge troopers responded to the Weis Super Market Gas Station in the 900 block of Weir Lake Road on July 13 for reports of a man in a white truck who had been pumping gas, leaving the gasoline station, and coming back to pump more gasoline.

In recent months, there have been multiple incidents of fraudulent purchases of gasoline, where the vehicle will max the gasoline pump out of $99 worth of gasoline using fraudulent credit cards and/or gift cards.

The Weis Super Market District Loss Prevention Manager told PSP Fern Ridge that the vehicle and man, Lazaro Garcia-Alarcon, 23, of Hialeah, Florida, had been on surveillance making fraudulent purchases of gasoline, and has maxed out the pump at $99 worth of gasoline six times from July 10 to July 13 using several different credit card numbers.

Upon the troopers’ arrival, Garcia-Alarcon stopped pumping gas into a large tank located in the bed of his truck and attempted to leave the scene. This transaction was at 11:37 a.m. for $40.79.

Troopers detained Garcia-Alarcon, and he was transported back to PSP Fern Ridge barracks to be interviewed, while the white Ford F150 was towed to the barracks.

Troopers interviewed Garcia-Alarcon, at which time he said he is originally from Cuba; however, he has come to Pennsylvania to make more money as an Uber driver.

Garcia-Alarcon said he visits New York City often, but does not live there. He said living in Pennsylvania makes it easy to go back and forth to the city.

Garcia-Alarcon said he lives out of his truck and does not have a job, and that he often drives around to construction sites and asks for work.

He was questioned about how he maintains his lifestyle if he is not working, and said he came to Pennsylvania with $2,000 in cash.

Garcia-Alarcon said he has two credit cards and he found two gift cards in Miami and has used them to make several transactions involving fuel.

The cards had local ZIP codes on the back.

Garcia-Alarcon said there were about 30 more gift cards located in the truck, and that he found them in Miami near a garbage can inside of a fanny pack.

He admitted that he did use one of the gift cards to purchase gasoline on Tuesday, and that he uses the gasoline in the tank to fuel his own truck.

A search of Garcia-Alarcon’s vehicle was conducted through a search warrant, at which time 41 gift cards were seized. In all, he was found to be in possession of 44 gift cards/credit cards.

The gifts were ran through the Electronic Recovery and Access to Date Group Inc. machine and were found to be cloned credit cards, as Garcia-Alarcon utilized them to fraudulently purchase $1,089 in gasoline from the gas station.

Garcia-Alarcon faces charges of possession of instrument of crime with intent, and possess access device knowing counterfeit, altered.

He is currently incarcerated in the Monroe County Prison in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing July 23 before District Judge Daniel Kresge of Tannersville.
