Background checks for gun sales down over last three months

Background checks for gun sales in Pennsylvania slowed down over the last three months following a run of record highs.

The commonwealth’s background check system, the Pennsylvania Instant Check system, reported that background checks slowed in the second quarter of 2021.

The third and fourth quarter of 2020, and the first quarter of 2021 all set records for the highest ever number of background checks recorded since the system was put in place in 1998.

The number of background checks in the last quarter, 334,108, was still higher than the same quarter a year ago (314,319).

6,548 people were denied following their background check.

Of those, 1,286 were referred to law enforcement agencies. Another 37 were arrested when their background check turned up an outstanding warrant.
